Description
Nanao is a young boy who appears in the anime adaptation of Mermaid Forest, specifically within the story arc known as Mermaid’s Mask. He is first encountered by the main characters, Yuta and Mana, after he jumps from a moving car in an attempt to escape, leaving him scraped and injured. What draws immediate attention is that Nanao carries a medicine that rapidly heals his wounds, an ability that concerns Yuta and Mana because it suggests involvement with mermaid flesh, the source of immortality and great danger in their world.
Nanao’s background is marked by deception and exploitation. The woman he believes to be his mother is actually his grandmother. Her genuine son, the elder Nanao, was forced as a child to consume mermaid flesh by his own mother after an argument with her ex-husband. The elder Nanao survived the ordeal but was forever changed. Years later, the grandmother kidnapped Nanao’s son—the young boy seen in the story—when he was a toddler. She raised him as her own, renaming him Nanao and claiming him as her replacement child. Her obsessive goal is to gradually acclimate the boy to mermaid flesh by feeding him a daily dose of Mermaid’s Ashes, a powdered substance she hopes will build his immunity so he can eventually consume the flesh directly without dying or transforming into a Lost Soul, the monstrous beings that result from failed consumption.
In terms of personality, Nanao is portrayed as an innocent and vulnerable child who is largely unaware of the full danger surrounding him. He obediently takes the medicine given to him, trusting the woman he thinks is his mother. He does not fully understand why he must take it or the horrific purpose behind it. He is frightened and confused by the events unfolding around him, especially when he is involved in a car chase and later when he is taken back into the custody of his grandmother. Despite this, he shows resilience in his attempts to escape and a natural curiosity about the strangers who try to help him.
Nanao’s motivation is simply to return to a normal life, free from captivity and forced medication. He does not seek immortality or power; he is a victim of an adult’s desperate and misguided scheme. His role in the story is to serve as a catalyst that forces Yuta and Mana to intervene, highlighting the recurring theme in Mermaid Forest of the destructive consequences of immortality when pursued through selfish and manipulative means.
His key relationship is with his grandmother, who is his primary captor. She is a tragic figure in her own right, driven by the loss of her original son and a warped desire to preserve a version of him through the boy. The elder Nanao, the boy’s real father, is also a significant figure in the background; he appears years after the kidnapping to reclaim his son, revealing the long chain of suffering caused by the mermaid’s flesh. Yuta and Mana act as temporary protectors for the younger Nanao, but their role is limited because they cannot undo the psychological and physical damage already inflicted.
Throughout his brief appearance, Nanao does not undergo significant character development in the sense of changing his beliefs or gaining new abilities. Instead, his arc is about being rescued from a fate he never chose. His primary notable ability is the accelerated healing granted by the Mermaid’s Ashes he has been consuming, which allows him to recover from injuries in moments. This ability is a direct result of his grandmother’s experimentation and is not something he actively controls or understands. It serves as a visible sign of the unnatural influence mermaid flesh has on the human body, even in a diluted form.
