Description
Ni Jenyi, also referred to as Dr. Ni Jianyi, is a complex antagonist in the Saiyuki universe, particularly active during the events of Saiyuki Reload Gunlock. He serves as the chief scientist orchestrating the revival of the demon lord Gyumaoh under the patronage of Gyokumen Koushu, and he is also one of the five Sanzo priests, known by his true title Ukoku Sanzo. His background is marked by a stark contrast between a privileged, academic upbringing and a later abandonment of that life for the path of a Buddhist monk.
Born into an affluent family of scholars, Ni Jenyi earned his doctorate at a young age but left his career to join a monastery as the apprentice Kenyuu. After meeting the previous Sanzo priest Koumyou Sanzo, he murdered the elderly priest Goudai and seized the title for himself, thereafter being given the name Ukoku by Koumyou. He briefly traveled with Koumyou before setting out on his own, eventually adopting the disguise of a disheveled scientist with spiked hair and stubble to infiltrate Houtou Castle as its sole human resident, using his expertise in both science and youkai magic.
His personality is calculating, arrogant, and manipulative. He derives amusement from observing the struggles of the Sanzo Ikkou and even his own allies, treating their conflicts like a game. He maintains a facade of deference toward Gyokumen Koushu, with whom he has a physical relationship, but in truth he is subtly pulling her strings to further his own obscure agenda.
