Description
Gato, also known as Gat or by his full name Gatty Nenehawk, is a central supporting character introduced in the "Even a Worm" arc of the anime Saiyuki Reload Gunlock. He is a man of few words, acting as the stoic and imposing bodyguard for the young man named Hazel. Standing over two meters tall with a powerful physique, Gato has dark skin and long dark hair worn in thick dreadlocks, one of which is adorned with a feather. He typically wears a bandana over his forehead, a long-sleeved collared shirt with a red tie, a brown vest, chaps, and pants. A notable feature is the scar stretching diagonally across his face, as well as the distinctive yellow eyes that mark him as one of the reanimated dead. He wields a pair of highly accurate handguns with immense skill.
The background established for Gato in the anime is a tragic one. He originally lived peacefully with his native tribe, which worshipped a being known as the Great Spirit. This existence was shattered when a group of hunters arrived and began slaughtering the local wildlife. Gato and his people tried to stop them but were powerless against the hunters' guns. Fatally wounded by a bullet, Gato was revived by the Great Spirit and, with his newfound strength, killed the hunters. The Great Spirit then transported him to Europe, where a young Hazel was in the midst of killing numerous demons. Under the Great Spirit's orders, Gato reluctantly killed the boy. Overwhelmed with guilt after witnessing Hazel's tragic past, Gato begged the Great Spirit to bring Hazel back to life, offering his own existence in exchange. The Great Spirit granted this wish, giving Hazel's mirror the power to revive humans using the souls of demons. However, the Great Spirit also altered Hazel's memories to make him believe he had defeated Gato, and placed a monster within Gato's body to allow him to continue moving and following Hazel's commands. Gato willingly went along with this fabricated reality, setting the stage for their journey.
Gato's personality is defined by his extreme silence, expressionless demeanor, and unwavering obedience to Hazel. He takes Hazel's commands as absolute and serves as a perfect, efficient bodyguard. Despite his fearsome appearance and the violent acts he commits, he is fundamentally a pacifist with a good-natured and compassionate heart. This internal conflict is visible in the rare moments he hesitates to follow an order that violates his gentle nature, such as when he is reluctant to harm a young demon. He does not require sleep, food, or other necessities of the living, which further emphasizes his state as a reanimated being. His motivation is singular and profound: Hazel is his entire world. He believes his destiny is to protect Hazel, and he is willing to sacrifice his own body repeatedly to do so, knowing that Hazel can revive him using the souls stored in his pendant. Beyond his duty, Gato harbors a deep-seated hope that Hazel can be freed from the hatred that consumes him.
Gato's primary and most significant relationship is with Hazel. He acts as Hazel's protector, enforcer, and constant companion. Though he follows orders absolutely, his actions are driven not by mindless servitude but by a genuine desire to help the boy who suffered so greatly. He endures the charade of their relationship, knowing the truth about Hazel's altered memories. His key relationship with the Sanzo party forms around Son Goku. Goku, with his innocent and nonchalant nature, is one of the few people who tries to connect with Gato without fear or prejudice, and Gato comes to think of Goku as a friend. His interactions with the other members of the Sanzo party, as well as Kougaiji's group, are marked by a quiet indifference, though he shows clear compassion, such as when he refuses to kill Ririn and tucks her into bed instead.
Gato's development culminates in the series finale. Having grown to trust the Sanzo party, particularly Genjo Sanzo, he decides that the only way to truly save Hazel is to end the Great Spirit's deception. He chooses to fight the Sanzo party alone, without allowing Hazel to use any souls to revive him. In this final battle, they kill Gato, but before he dies, he reveals the full truth about Hazel's altered memories, finally giving Hazel the chance to confront reality and break free from the cycle of hatred. Gato's death is a final act of self-sacrifice and friendship, fulfilling his long-held wish to help Hazel find peace.
Physically, Gato possesses notable abilities befitting his role as a bodyguard. He is incredibly strong and, despite his large frame, has surprisingly quick movements. He is highly accurate with his pair of handguns, using them to efficiently defeat demons. His most notable supernatural ability is his state as a reanimated corpse. As long as Hazel has a demon soul stored in his pendant or a fresh corpse nearby to supply a soul, Gato can be instantly healed or brought back to life after being destroyed in battle. This makes him a nearly unstoppable protector for Hazel, willing to throw himself into any danger without fear of permanent consequence.
