TV-Series
Description
Hikaru Ichinomiya is a young boy who initially appears as a mysterious and influential figure known only by the alias Gozen before eventually transferring to Seiyo Academy as a student. Physically, he has blonde hair and blue eyes. At the beginning of his introduction, he is seen wearing formal attire appropriate for his position at the Easter Company, such as a white jacket or a black suit, but later adopts the Seiyo Academy uniform, distinguished by a bow tie and sweater vest.
Hikaru's background is unique and reveals a lonely childhood imposed upon him by his family. He is the grandson of Kazuomi Hoshina, the head of the Easter Company. When Hikaru was only a baby, his grandfather chose him to lead the company, a role Hikaru was forced into without regard for his own emotional needs. This upbringing caused him to hide his loneliness, believing it to be worthless, which ultimately left his heart empty. A direct consequence of this emotional void was that Hikaru did not possess a Heart's Egg, the manifestation of one's potential and dreams, making him unable to feel emotions like sadness, joy, or compassion.
In his role as the hidden head of Easter, Hikaru was known as Gozen, a name the company employees used to refer to the highest authority within the organization. To maintain this persona and make himself sound like an older, powerful man, he used a voice changer. His primary motivation for having Easter search for the Embryo was not a grand, altruistic wish but a personal and materialistic one. According to the manga, he wished for a rare, one-of-a-kind jewel, believing the Embryo to be a very rare stone that would fill the void in his heart. This desire connected to his hobby of collecting shiny, precious stones, a pursuit he thought would replace his missing emotions.
Hikaru's personality is initially very cold, stoic, and impassive, a direct result of his empty heart. He is highly intelligent, which may contribute to his tendency to think negatively, as observed by another character. He does not know how to laugh or express typical emotions, presenting a serious and mysterious facade. A significant turning point occurs when Amu Hinamori offers him taiyaki, a small act that begins to melt his cold exterior. After Amu agrees to help him start over, he is able to regain his Heart's Egg, an event that marks the beginning of his emotional development.
His role in the story evolves from an unseen antagonist to a central character in need of guidance. After regaining his Heart's Egg, Hikaru transfers to Seiyo Academy and reveals to Amu that he has received a Guardian Egg. He is then appointed as a Guardian Apprentice, a future candidate for the Guardians who will one day take over leadership of the group from the current members. As an apprentice, he trains alongside another new student and fellow apprentice, Rikka Hiiragi.
Hikaru's key relationships are central to his development. His relationship with his grandfather Kazuomi is strained, as Kazuomi forced the role of company leader onto him believing it would make him happy. After Hikaru regains his heart, his grandfather apologizes and offers comfort, beginning to restore their bond. Amu Hinamori acts as his primary mentor and the catalyst for his change, helping him regain his Heart's Egg and guiding him through his time as an apprentice. With the other Guardians, he receives advice and training, with Nagihiko Fujisaki and Tadase Hotori offering counsel, and Yaya Yuiki helping him learn practical skills. His relationship with Rikka Hiiragi starts with him being slightly annoyed by her quirky nature, but he later finds her interesting and similar to Amu. He shows concern for her, and it is Rikka who convinces him to accept a gift from his grandfather.
Throughout the series, Hikaru undergoes notable development, learning to experience emotions such as joy and laughter. A memorable moment that levels his defensive walls involves him becoming dizzy on an amusement park ride, leading to genuine, uninhibited laughter. His unique condition of having an empty heart and lacking an Egg makes his journey toward regaining his emotions a central focus. By the end of the series, he has received his Guardian Egg, though it remains unhatched, symbolizing his ongoing path toward discovering his true self. Among his notable abilities, Hikaru possesses the rare trait of being able to see Shugo Chara even before he had his own Heart's Egg.
