TV-Series
Description
The mother of Kagome Higurashi is a character referred to in the series simply as Mama or Ms. Higurashi. In some source material, she is given the name Nodoka Higurashi, though this name is never used within the story itself. She is the widowed mother of Kagome Higurashi and her younger brother Sōta Higurashi, and she lives with her father-in-law, whom Kagome calls Grandpa, at the family's Shinto shrine in modern-day Tokyo. Her husband died some years before the events of the series in a car accident, and she has raised her two children as a single parent with the support of her father-in-law.

Ms. Higurashi is characterized as a deeply warm, caring, and supportive mother. She is consistently gentle and patient, rarely displaying frustration or anger even when faced with her daughter's increasingly unusual explanations for her absences and injuries. Her personality is defined by an unwavering trust in Kagome and a quiet acceptance of the extraordinary circumstances that enter her life. She does not press Kagome for details about where she goes or what she does, instead choosing to offer practical help in the form of packed meals, supplies, and encouragement.

Her primary motivation is the well-being and happiness of her children. She wants Kagome to be safe and fulfilled, and she respects Kagome's choices even when they are difficult or unexplained. She plays no active role in the main conflict against Naraku or in the quest for the Shikon Jewel shards. Her role in Inuyasha: The Final Act, as in the original series, is a grounding presence in the modern world. She represents the ordinary life and family bonds that Kagome is torn between leaving and preserving. She appears in scenes set in Kagome's home, usually during Kagome's brief returns to the present day, where she tends to household chores, prepares meals, and offers quiet words of care.

Her key relationships are with her two children and, to a lesser degree, with Inuyasha. She treats Inuyasha with genuine warmth and hospitality, welcoming him into her home and offering him food without fear or judgment. This acceptance is significant given Inuyasha's half-demon appearance and rough demeanor. She also maintains a patient, affectionate dynamic with her father-in-law, who is eccentric and prone to dramatic pronouncements about the shrine's history and spiritual lore.

Ms. Higurashi does not undergo any notable character development during The Final Act, as her role is a consistent and stable source of maternal support. She does not grow or change because her function is to remain a constant, reassuring figure for Kagome. She possesses no supernatural abilities or combat skills; she is an ordinary human woman with no connection to the spiritual powers that define her daughter's role as a priestess and reincarnation of Kikyō. Her competence lies entirely in domestic care, emotional steadiness, and quiet resilience.
