Description
Naraku is the primary antagonist of InuYasha: The Final Act. He is a spider half-demon who was born from the fusion of a human bandit named Onigumo and a multitude of weak demons. Onigumo, crippled and consumed by jealousy and lust for the shrine maiden Kikyo, offered his soul to demons in exchange for a new body, resulting in the creation of Naraku. His name translates to hell or the underworld. Naraku is characterized by his extreme ruthlessness, cunning, and manipulative nature. He is cold, calculating, and derives pleasure from causing the suffering of others. His personality is defined by a craving for absolute power and a deep-seated loneliness that drives him to destroy the bonds between others. He possesses a fragile ego and can become unsettled by the lingering attachment of his human heart, particularly his complicated feelings for Kikyo. Naraku's primary motivation is to obtain all the shards of the Shikon Jewel and become a full demon. In the story, he serves as the elusive, behind-the-scenes orchestrator of nearly every major conflict and tragedy. He is directly responsible for the death of Kikyo, the sealing of Inuyasha, the curse on Miroku's family that gave him the Wind Tunnel, and the destruction of Sango's village and family. Throughout The Final Act, he relentlessly manipulates events and characters to collect the Shikon shards, using his incarnations as pawns. Key relationships include his bitter enmity with Inuyasha and his complex, possessive connection to Kikyo. He also has a master-servant dynamic with his various incarnations, such as Kagura, Kanna, Hakudoshi, and Byakuya, whom he creates from his own body and whose hearts he holds captive. Naraku undergoes significant development in The Final Act. He gradually collects all the Shikon shards, completing the jewel, and uses its power to repeatedly transform his body into a more powerful demonic form. He attempts to rid himself of his human heart, which contains his residual feelings for Kikyo, by expelling it as separate incarnations. In his final battle, he fully transforms into a massive, monstrous spider demon. He is ultimately defeated when Inuyasha and his allies pierce his body, and the completed Shikon Jewel is purified and wished away by Kagome. Notable abilities include shape-shifting and rapid regeneration, allowing him to reform from almost any physical injury. He can create powerful barriers that can envelop entire castles and reflect enemy attacks. He produces a deadly miasma that can dissolve the ground and is lethal to most beings. He commands hellish insects called Saimyosho, which carry a potent venom. His body can extend into tentacles and be freely decomposed and recomposed, making physical attacks largely ineffective. His most distinctive ability is the creation of avatars, independent beings formed from parts of his own body, each with unique powers and personalities. He can also share vision with these puppets and set interlocking traps through careful analysis.
