Description
Kazuichi Arai, almost exclusively referred to by his nickname Pin, is a physical education teacher and the baseball coach at Kitahoro High School. He first appears as the temporary homeroom teacher for Sawako Kuronuma's class when the original teacher falls ill, and later becomes their permanent homeroom teacher. He is a former student of Kitahoro High School, having attended about ten years prior to the start of the series. In his youth, he was a star baseball player, part of a league team coached by Shouta Kazehaya's father, which is how he came to know Kazehaya and his friends Ryu Sanada and Chizuru Yoshida from a young age. He is also a good friend of Toru Sanada, Ryu's older brother.
Physically, Pin is the tallest character in the series, standing at 193 centimeters (6 feet 4 inches) with a stocky build, broad back, and tanned skin. His most distinctive feature is his auburn, spiky hair, which he typically wears styled upright, adding to his height. While he considers himself very handsome and prone to self-praise, most others find his appearance off-putting due to his outlandish hairstyle; it is noted by others that he is actually quite good-looking when he lets his hair down. His typical attire around school is a bright orange sweater, training pants, and a whistle around his neck.
On the surface, Pin projects the personality of a loud, arrogant, and egotistical man whose life philosophy is I am the best. He often behaves in a manner more suited to a teenager than a teacher, eagerly running to witness a fight or teasing his students for his own amusement, particularly Kazehaya. He is also a flirtatious and self-proclaimed girl-hunter, though he is perpetually rejected, largely due to his boisterous personality and spiky hair.
Despite this childish and self-centered facade, Pin is secretly a very insightful and caring mentor who is deeply invested in his students well-being. He is highly observant and has a knack for understanding his students internal struggles, often showing up at the right moment to offer surprisingly frank and practical advice, especially regarding love, friendship, and future aspirations. He takes a particular interest in Sawako Kuronuma and her close circle of friends, whom he considers the most interesting highlight of his teaching career. Misunderstanding a suggestion from Sawako about a salt bath, he develops a long-running false impression that she has the power to exorcise ghosts.
His own motivations as a teacher stem from a significant past decision. A supremely talented baseball player who was scouted by professional teams, Pin ultimately turned down this path to become a teacher and high school baseball coach. He made this choice because he cherished his own high school baseball experience more than the prospect of a professional career and wanted to relive that passion by mentoring the next generation of players. This backstory fuels his core belief in self-confidence and his encouragement for students to take risks and push past their own limits to achieve their dreams.
Throughout the series, his role evolves from that of a temporary, comedic nuisance to a stable, guiding presence. He develops a particularly notable rapport with Ayane Yano, frequently consulting with her and offering counsel on her personal life and future. In a significant moment near the end of the series, Ayane confesses her romantic feelings to him, which he kindly rejects, reaffirming his role as her teacher and encouraging her to focus confidently on her future. In addition to his physical prowess and coaching ability, Pin also possesses a form of extrasensory perception or keen intuition about the paranormal, a trait he himself is largely unaware of.
