Description
Hiaburi Lion is a Messenger from the anime series Kämpfer. The name Hiaburi translates to burning at the stake or death by fire, which follows the series theme of naming its Messenger characters after brutal methods of death. In keeping with this theme, Hiaburi Lion takes the physical form of a plush toy resembling a black lion with a scorched appearance.

Among the various Messengers that assist the Kämpfer fighters, Hiaburi Lion is notable for being the oldest, with an existence that predates the Zoumotsu Animal toyline from which these creatures originate. Unlike some of the other Messengers, it does not have its intestines protruding from its body in the novel version, though the anime adaptation does give it this characteristic feature.

Hiaburi Lion belongs to Kaede Sakura, one of the main characters, who obtained it by chance despite its rarity. The lion serves a crucial narrative function later in the story. During a sleepover at Kaede's residence, Shizuku Sangou takes the Hiaburi Lion doll and interrogates it to extract information. Under this questioning, the Messenger reveals the true purpose behind the Kämpfer battles, explaining that the Moderators use the Kämpfer conflicts as a proxy war to settle disputes between two opposing powers from a distant universe, allowing them to determine a victor without direct confrontation. This revelation represents the character's most significant contribution to the plot, as it removes much of the mystery surrounding why the Kämpfer must fight one another.

As a Messenger, Hiaburi Lion's primary role is to assist and inform those chosen to become Kämpfer, though its advanced age gives it unique knowledge that other Messengers may not possess. Unlike the more talkative and personality-driven Messengers such as Harakiri Tora or Seppuku Kuro Usagi, Hiaburi Lion is depicted as an older, more reserved figure whose value lies in the secrets it holds rather than in daily guidance or combat support.
