Description
Precht Gaebolg, better known as Hades, is a central antagonist with profound ties to the series' core history. He was one of the four founding members of the Fairy Tail guild and later served as its second Guild Master, eventually passing the title to Makarov Dreyar. In his youth, he was a treasure hunter who, alongside his companions Yuri Dreyar and Warrod Sequen, journeyed to Tenrou Island. There, they met Mavis Vermilion, and together they would go on to establish Fairy Tail.

After many decades as a respected leader, Hades left Fairy Tail on a personal journey to uncover the essence of magic. His research led him to the dark wizard Zeref, whom he identified as the root of all magic. This quest fundamentally changed his worldview, causing him to abandon his former ideals and embrace the path of a dark mage. He subsequently founded the dark guild Grimoire Heart, taking on the name Hades, which references the Greek god of the underworld.

Hades is a tall, elderly man with a muscular build, long silver-white hair, and a long beard. He typically wears dark, armor-like attire with a horned helmet and a cape bearing Grimoire Heart's symbol. A notable feature is the eyepatch covering his right eye, which he lost in a battle with the Blue Skull guild during his treasure hunting days. Beneath this patch lies his Demon's Eye, which, when activated, dramatically alters his appearance, causing his hair and facial hair to stand on end.

In terms of personality, Hades is a calm and confident individual who displays little to no fear, even when facing powerful opponents like his successor, Makarov. He possesses a philosophical and cynical view of the world, believing it is full of concepts that cannot be simply categorized as good or evil. He is driven by his obsession to reach the essence of magic, which he believes to be darkness, and views his former guild, now led by Makarov, as having strayed from this "proper" path. Despite his villainous role, he shows moments of melancholy, admitting that fighting his former comrades saddens him, though he is willing to do so to achieve his goals.

Hades serves as the primary antagonist of the Tenrou Island arc. His objective is to capture Zeref, who is sealed on the island, and to eradicate the current members of Fairy Tail. He leads his elite team, the Seven Kin of Purgatory, in an assault on the island during the guild's S-Class trials. In his confrontation with Makarov, he overpowers the guild master with little effort, leaving him gravely injured. He later confronts the younger generation of Fairy Tail mages, proving to be nearly invincible until his trump card is destroyed.

His key relationships are steeped in history. He shares a deep, complex bond with Makarov Dreyar, whom he personally trained and appointed as the third Guild Master. Makarov fondly remembers Precht as a wise and harmonious teacher, making the revelation that Hades is his old master devastating. He also has a foundational relationship with Mavis Vermilion, the first master, whose legacy he later insults, revealing his rejection of her principles.

Throughout his life, Hades undergoes a tragic development. He transforms from a jovial young treasure hunter and a benevolent, respected guild master into a cynical dark mage who prioritizes power and forbidden knowledge over the bonds of friendship that Fairy Tail holds sacred. His journey serves as a dark parallel to the guild's own values, showing how the pursuit of power can corrupt even the most noble beginnings. His story ends on Tenrou Island, where, after being defeated by Natsu Dragneel with power from Laxus Dreyar, he is ultimately killed by Zeref himself.

Hades is an exceptionally powerful wizard, boasting immense magical power that surpasses even a member of the Ten Wizard Saints like Makarov. His most significant asset is the Devil's Heart, a core installed on Grimoire Heart's airship that contains his actual heart. This device grants him a vast supply of magical power, immortality, and seemingly inexhaustible stamina. As long as the Devil's Heart functions, he is nearly invincible, but its destruction drastically weakens him. His signature abilities include Chain Magic for binding and physical assault, and the Amaterasu Formula, a powerful sealing magic that creates massive explosions, with Formula 100 being powerful enough to shatter Makarov's defensive spells. By using his Demon's Eye, he can access the Black Arts and perform Living Magic, a forbidden technique from Zeref's books that allows him to create demonic familiars from inanimate objects. He is also able to cast Grimoire Law, a dark counterpart to Fairy Tail's legendary spell, Fairy Law.
