Description
Hibiki Laytis, also known as Hundred Night Hibiki, is a supporting character who belongs to the Blue Pegasus guild as a member of the celebrated team known as the Trimens. He is a long-standing and trusted member of his guild, to the point that Master Bob considers him his right-hand man and entrusted him with highly sensitive information regarding the dark guild Oración Seis. Physically, Hibiki is a slim young man of average height with spiky, messy brownish-blond hair, dark eyes, and noticeably long eyelashes. His handsome features are widely acknowledged, and he is said to be a primary reason why many female mages apply to join Blue Pegasus.
In terms of personality, Hibiki initially comes across as a typical womanizer alongside his Trimens comrades, charming women of any age with little shame and reportedly maintaining many girlfriends at once. Despite this flamboyant exterior, he is also polite, addresses others with honorifics, and is capable of becoming serious when the situation demands it. He is more perceptive and knowledgeable than he lets on, possessing a strong will and a gentlemanly demeanor. This serious side is most evident during the battle against Oración Seis, where he resists the mind-altering effects of the powerful weapon Nirvana, crediting Lucy Heartfilia's pure love for her Celestial Spirits for helping him maintain his sanity. A significant part of his background includes a past relationship with his guild mate Karen Lilica, who was murdered by the Oración Seis member Angel. While Hibiki apparently never fully got over her death, he does not let the tragedy interfere with his duties. Later in the series, it is implied he has romantic feelings for his teammate Jenny Realight.
Hibiki's primary role in the story is that of a strategic coordinator, a function made possible by his unique magical ability known as Archive. This rare and powerful magic allows him to transfer, receive, and manage information as magical data. He can mentally communicate with allies over vast distances, share knowledge of maps and surroundings directly into their minds, and coordinate movements by acting as a command center. His most pivotal contribution occurs during the battle against Angel, where he transfers the knowledge of a high-level spell called Urano Metria directly into Lucy's mind, enabling her to defeat their enemy, though this act drains him to the point of unconsciousness. Beyond information transfer, Archive has practical combat applications. He can manifest magical screens for defense, creating a barrier called Protect powerful enough to block an Ice-Make spell. He can also use these screens offensively in a technique known as Overload, wherein he explosively detonates them in front of a target. Over the seven-year time skip, his data processing speed with Archive has increased significantly. His role in the Grand Magic Games is smaller but sees him participating as a member of Blue Pegasus, and he shares a brief, flirtatious interaction with Fairy Tail's Cana Alberona, asking her out only to be told she would need to drink an entire barrel of liquor first.
