Midnight, whose real name is Macbeth, is a dark mage who originally belonged to the Oración Seis, a powerful dark guild within the Balam Alliance. His initial goal, along with the rest of the guild, was to locate and obtain Nirvana, a destructive sealed magic. He views Brain, the guild's master, as his father, though they are not biologically related. Little is known about his early life; even the Blue Pegasus guild, which monitored the Oración Seis, had only his name before his first appearance.

Personality-wise, Midnight is typically relaxed and sleepy, often resting on a flying carpet. However, he also displays a psychopathic and sadistic streak, particularly enjoying battles against strong opponents and prolonging their suffering. He shows little concern for the weak and takes pleasure in dominating powerful foes.

Midnight uses Reflector magic and Darkness magic. Reflector allows him to distort and negate incoming magical attacks, making him a formidable defensive opponent. At midnight, his Reflector magic reaches its peak strength, and he can transform into a dark, gargantuan monster. This ability allowed him to easily defeat members of Blue Pegasus and nearly overwhelm Erza Scarlet during the Oración Seis arc. After the initial defeat of the Oración Seis, Midnight later reappears as part of the Reborn Oración Seis, where he continues to serve Brain. His role remains that of a loyal subordinate and a dangerous combatant, though his personal development beyond his loyalty to Brain and his sadistic tendencies is limited within the series.
