Description
Popu Harukaze, whose name is usually written in English as Pop Harukaze, is the younger sister of the protagonist Doremi Harukaze in the Ojamajo Doremi franchise, and she appears as a supporting character in Ojamajo Doremi DOKKAAN!, the fourth television season. She is four years younger than Doremi and was born on September 9, making her personal color red. In the early part of the story she attends Sonatine Kindergarten, and she later enrolls at Misora First Elementary School, where she remains as a lower-grade student during the events of DOKKAAN!.
Her connection to the magical world began at age four, when she accidentally witnessed Doremi and her friends Hazuki and Aiko using magic. Her decision to become a witch apprentice came from watching her sister and thinking that what Doremi was doing looked interesting, so she followed the same path. She became the fourth apprentice to join the Maho-do group, with a red apprentice outfit, the fairy Fafa as her companion, and the magic phrase "Pipit Puritto Puritan Peperuto." Her magical tool is a horn-like instrument with a trumpet sound, and unlike the older apprentices, she continues to use first-season style clothing and equipment throughout the series.
In terms of personality, Pop is dependable, self-assured, and efficient, and she is admired by both adults and classmates for her responsible nature. This places her in constant contrast with her clumsy older sister. She frequently criticizes Doremi, points out her mistakes, and insists that she is mature, yet she remains very much a child underneath. Her early motivation as an apprentice was simply to be like Doremi. As she grows, her personal ambitions shift toward music. She begins piano lessons while still in the older class of kindergarten and trains seriously with the goal of becoming a pianist, with her efforts in later stories directed toward entering Karen Girls Academy. Her responsible nature also leads her to take on duties at the Maho-do and to act as a peacemaker among her classmates.
In DOKKAAN!, the older apprentices devote themselves to supporting Hana, who has aged into an apparent sixth grader, while Pop appears in a junior supporting role. She remains one step behind the other apprentices in rank, since they have already reached the first class, and her presence in the later seasons is reduced because she is busy with intensive piano practice for recitals. Even so, her loyalty to Doremi remains central to her part of the story. When Doremi announces at the end of the season that she will not become a full witch, Pop tearfully states that she will not become one either, reflecting that her magical path was always tied to her sister. Around that time she also passes the first-class apprentice exam ahead of Hana and briefly holds a red crystal ball, though she ultimately does not pursue full witchhood.
Her relationship with Doremi is a typical bickering-sister dynamic. She mocks Doremi's failures and scolds her when she acts irresponsibly, but she is devoted to her and supports her in serious moments. With Onpu she gets along especially well, since their temperaments are similar, and the other apprentices treat her as a shared little sister. She addresses Majorika by the nickname Bunyuu-chan and interacts with her with little formality. At school, Pop becomes a leader among students from Sonatine Kindergarten and tries to keep peace with children from Primula Kindergarten, although she has persistent friction with a classmate named Erika Tamaki. A boy in her class named Kimitaka, whom she often fought with, confesses to her around the time of his transfer to Hokkaido.
