Description
Marie is a human character from the Japanese manga and anime series Kinnikuman. Her full name is Mari Nikaido, and she is introduced early in the story as a kindergarten teacher at Suminoe Kindergarten, later called Himawari Kindergarten in the anime adaptation. She is the first love interest of the protagonist, Kinnikuman, and is characterized as a Yamato nadeshiko, embodying traditional Japanese feminine virtues of grace, loyalty, and inner strength.

Marie was born and raised in Japan and works as a teacher for young children. She initially appears in the early chapters of the manga, but her role is largely replaced by the character Bibinba as the story progresses. In the anime adaptation, however, she remains a recurring and more prominent figure throughout the series. She becomes Kinnikuman's official girlfriend and, in the final episode of the Kinnikuman Oua Soudatsu-hen arc, marries him. In the sequel series Kinnikuman II, set years later, Marie has returned to Japan after studying early childhood education overseas. She takes over her late father's role as the director of Suminoe Kindergarten and adopts a baby girl named Rinko Nikaido, who later becomes the love interest of Kinnikuman's son, Kinniku Mantaro.

Marie's personality is warm, patient, and devoted. She deeply cares for Kinnikuman and consistently supports him, cheering for him during his battles and worrying about his safety. She is intelligent and articulate, often providing calm commentary during matches alongside her friend Natsuko Shono, the reporter. Her motivation stems from her genuine belief in Kinnikuman's goodness and potential as a hero, despite his clumsy and foolish exterior. She remains loyal to him even when others doubt him.

In the story, Marie serves primarily as an emotional anchor and romantic interest for Kinnikuman. In the anime, she appears in many major arcs, including the Golden Mask arc and the Scramble for the Throne arc, where her presence reinforces the stakes of Kinnikuman's fights. Her relationship with Kinnikuman is central to her role, though she also shares a close friendship with Natsuko and a rivalry with Bibinba in the anime. Her bond with Meat, Kinnikuman's sidekick, is also affectionate, as Meat admires her as well.

Marie undergoes notable development across the series. In the original story, she evolves from a simple crush into a steadfast partner willing to stand by Kinnikuman through danger. In the anime, her commitment leads to marriage, marking a clear emotional resolution. By the time of Kinnikuman II, she has matured into a responsible and independent woman who has moved on romantically but still holds a deep respect for Kinnikuman. Her adoptive daughter Rinko represents her growth as a caregiver and her ability to build a new life.

As a normal human, Marie possesses no superhuman abilities. Her contributions are emotional and moral rather than physical. She demonstrates notable courage by staying near dangerous battlefields to support Kinnikuman and by using her knowledge to help broadcast key events. Her greatest ability is her unwavering emotional support, which often gives Kinnikuman the encouragement he needs to persevere.
