Description
Kazuo Nakano is a recurring character in the Kinnikuman franchise, depicted as a short, middle-aged man. His background is rooted in his real-world profession, as he is the vice editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen Jump and the editor-in-chief of Fresh Jump. This position led to him being caricatured by the manga artists Yudetamago, and he became a regular supporting character within the series. He is an Earthling from Takeo, Saga, Japan, and his age is shown to progress over the course of the story, from around forty years old in early arcs to seventy-eight in the sequel series Kinnikuman Nisei. He is married to a woman named Kimiko and is friends with the announcer Yoshigai.

In terms of personality, Kazuo Nakano is a comedic and eccentric figure. He is generally viewed as foolish and a nuisance by those around him. His most defining trait is his overwhelming obsession with professional wrestling. He will often skip work to attend matches and sometimes impulsively tries to get involved in the fights, though he is always easily knocked away in the next panel. He is usually the first to laugh at the protagonist Kinnikuman's stupidity. A recurring gag in the manga involves his extreme lengths to see major matches, such as selling his own wife to afford a ticket. The anime adaptation alters this aspect of his personality, instead portraying him as being overly infatuated with his wife, often calling out her name during commentary or when he is in trouble. His preferred food is gyudon, specifically the saranami style where the meat and rice are served separate.

Kazuo Nakano's primary role in the story is that of the color commentator for the wrestling matches. In the original manga, he served largely as a background gag character, but the anime adaptation expanded his role significantly, making him a consistent presence in nearly every episode as he provides commentary. This role continues in the sequel series Kinnikuman Nisei. Beyond his commentary, he serves as a source of comic relief. He is not a fighter, and his attempts to interfere in matches only highlight his lack of any notable combat ability. In the spin-off Ultimate Muscle, he is incorrectly called Doc Nakano by other characters, a title he holds despite having no medical qualifications of any kind.

Kazuo Nakano has key relationships with a few other characters. He is the husband of Kimiko, and his behavior regarding her is a major source of comedy, whether he is selling her for tickets or proclaiming his devotion. He is also a friend and colleague of the announcer Yoshigai, with whom he often works during broadcasts. His primary connection to the main plot is through the protagonist, whose matches he watches and comments on, and for whose antics he has a great deal of laughter.

Regarding his development, Kazuo Nakano is a static character who does not undergo significant personal growth. He remains a comedic, trouble-making wrestling fan from his introduction onwards. His longevity is a feature, as he continues his role as commentator well into his seventies in the Nisei storyline. His visual design includes a loose wig that frequently falls off for comedic effect, a gag that is so central that he often refers to himself as Aderans Nakano-san, referencing a well-known wig manufacturer. In later series, he demonstrates the ability to remove this wig voluntarily.

Kazuo Nakano does not possess any notable abilities as a wrestler or fighter. His skills are entirely professional and meta-textual. His primary ability is his role as a color commentator, where he provides descriptive and often humorous narration of the matches. Another of his notable abilities is his capacity to appear in various minor, non-speaking roles throughout the manga, including cameos as a mailman, a customer, a kindergarten student, and a tour guide. His most significant ability, however, is his relentless, if completely ineffective, enthusiasm for wrestling, which compels him to skip work and insert himself into situations far beyond his capacity. He holds the minor title of Choujin Wrestling Commentator.
