Description
Faina S. Shinozaki is a sixteen-year-old girl from the Uranus sphere, born in the realm of Titania on September 1. She is the granddaughter of Prime Minister Lawrence, placing her within the upper echelons of Uranian aristocracy, though her demeanor is often aloof and mysterious. She has a gentle and composed outward appearance, with brown hair, red eyes, and a height of 165 centimeters, but this calm surface belies a deeply unstable and fanatical interior.

Her entire worldview is shaped by the harsh environment of Uranus, which gave rise to a specific religious sect following the teachings of a figure known as Mother Arne. Faina adheres to a very literal and extreme interpretation of this creed, adapting it as a personal ethical code to cope with her past. Her guiding principle is to "cut off the past with your own hands". She acts according to a unique sense of ethics that allows her to maintain a posture of absolute resolve and without hesitation, even in dire situations like combat, though this same logic leads her to commit horrific acts of violence.

Faina was rescued by Kouji Aiba and Ikumi Oze during the collapse of the Liebe Delta, an event that sets the main story in motion. Following the rescue, she came aboard the Ryvius and began working as a bridge operator and a cook, where her skill at making cakes is noted as an unexpected talent. She also keeps a pet ferret named Rafra, whose fierce behavior is thought to mirror Faina's own disturbed mental state.

Faina's role in the narrative is that of a tragic antagonist driven by her warped interpretation of faith. Her method of severing ties with the past is brutally literal: she murders anyone who reminds her of her previous life. She killed her former lover, McBain, on the Liebe Delta for disobeying Arne's teachings, and later strangled her roommate, Sandy Aren, to keep her secret safe. She becomes romantically attached to Kouji, viewing him as her savior, but their relationship deteriorates due to their conflicting ideologies and the presence of Aoi Housen.

As the situation on the Ryvius grows more desperate, Faina's fanaticism intensifies. She begins gathering believers among the crew, using Arne's teachings to exert influence. She comes to revere the increasingly dictatorial Ikumi Oze as a military god protecting Mother Arne. When she feels rejected by Kouji, who chooses Aoi, her madness fully surfaces. She tries to use her followers to kill Aoi, and when Kouji ultimately ends their relationship, she attempts to strangle him as he lies wounded. However, upon hearing that the past cannot be erased, she suffers a complete mental breakdown and realizes she cannot escape her own actions. In the final episodes, she does not return to the Ryvius, but Kouji later chooses to travel to the Uranus sphere because he has things he wishes to discuss with her, leaving the possibility of her fate open to interpretation.
