Description
Faina S. Shinozaki is a sixteen-year-old girl from the Uranus orbit, specifically born on the satellite Titania, where she was raised as the granddaughter of Prime Minister Lawrence. Her upbringing in this region, an environment harsh enough to have given rise to a distinct philosophy of survival, profoundly shapes her character. She is a young woman of striking appearance, with long brown hair, red eyes, and a slender figure, carrying herself with a calm and somewhat aloof demeanor that can make her seem distant or mysterious to others.

This serene exterior, however, conceals a mind of intense, unyielding conviction driven by her devotion to the teachings of Saint Arne. This belief system, which is presented almost as a philosophy rather than a traditional religion, holds that the past cannot be forgotten and therefore must be severed by one's own hands to move forward. For Faina, this is not a metaphorical guideline but a literal and terrifying imperative. She consistently demonstrates a complete lack of doubt or hesitation in her actions, approaching all situations with a chillingly pragmatic and compartmentalized mindset that defies conventional morality.

Faina is first encountered during the catastrophic collapse of the space academy Liebe Delta, where she is rescued by Kouji Aiba and Ikumi Oze. This event marks the beginning of her central role on the Ryvius, where she initially becomes a bridge operator, managing communications and ship-wide broadcasts alongside Kouji, to whom she grows close. Her role in the story evolves from that of a quiet survivor to a more active and deeply troubling figure. As the social order aboard the ship disintegrates, Faina begins to see the chaos as an opportunity. She starts gathering other vulnerable and isolated female students, offering them solace and purpose through her interpretation of Saint Arne's teachings, forming a small, devoted cult often referred to by fans as the Fainars. This marks her transition from a simple crew member to a manipulative figure who uses faith as a tool for control.

Her key relationships are marked by intense, often fatal, contradictions. She becomes romantically involved with Kouji Aiba, viewing him as her savior, but their relationship is strained by her rigid beliefs and his growing attraction to Aoi Hosen. When she overhears Kouji state that their relationship is over, it triggers a complete psychological breakdown, and she attempts to murder him herself, declaring that he will become her past. Her most significant, yet hidden, relationship is with her own violent history. Before ever setting foot on the Ryvius, she had already committed murder, strangling a former lover who threatened to reveal her transgressions against her faith. On the Ryvius, she kills again, murdering her former roommate Sandy Aren who had innocently inquired about her past, demonstrating a terrifying premeditation reinforced by her personal creed.

Faina's development is a descent from a composed and privileged young woman into a fanatical and broken figure. She rationalizes her murders as necessary acts of cutting away the past, a defense mechanism that spirals into madness when she can no longer control the present. Her personality shifts from quiet assistance to active manipulation, as seen when she orders one of her followers to attack Aoi out of jealousy. Ultimately, her rigid worldview is shattered by Kouji and the mysterious figure Neya, who confront her with the undeniable truth that the past cannot be severed but must instead be used as a foundation for the future. Unable to accept this, she suffers a mental collapse. In the end, she does not return to the Ryvius, but the final destination chosen for the ship is her home of Titania, where Kouji expresses a wish to meet and speak with her, leaving the possibility for a fragile reconciliation open.

Apart from her deadly convictions, Faina displays a notable talent for cooking, especially baking cakes, a skill that offers a brief glimpse of a more ordinary side to her character. She also keeps a pet ferret named Rahula, whose behavior mirrors her own mental state, becoming increasingly fierce and aggressive as her owner descends further into fanaticism and violence.
