TV-Series
Description
Duero McPhile serves as the ship doctor aboard the Nirvana. He is a man from the planet Taraak, a patriarchal society, and is considered one of its elite citizens. Such is his reputation that it is said he could obtain any job he wanted simply by submitting a blank resume with his name on it.
In terms of personality, Duero is consistently calm and collected, approaching most situations with a cool and analytical mind. This rational demeanor makes him a stabilizing presence on the ship, where tensions between the male and female crew members often run high. Despite his composure, he can become noticeably confused and awkward when faced with circumstances outside his formal education and life experience. A notable instance of this occurs during the delivery of a baby, where his medical knowledge proves insufficient for the hands-on, emotional reality of the situation, forcing him to coach two inexperienced crew members through the process.
Duero's primary role in the story is as the only licensed medical practitioner on the Nirvana. The female pirates initially object to his presence, but because their own medical facilities are no longer operational and he is the sole qualified doctor, they have no choice but to accept him as their official physician. He confidently asserts himself in emergencies, ignoring protests and assuring the crew that he poses no threat, simply taking charge to provide necessary care.
A key relationship for Duero develops with Parfait Balblair, who is the first woman he works closely with. Their professional partnership gradually deepens into a close friendship and eventually a mutual romantic attraction. Another notable interaction occurs with the young crew member Paiway Underberg, who is famously curious about a specific mystery surrounding Duero. Throughout the series, he consistently covers the right side of his face with his hair, and this side is never shown to the audience. Paiway eventually sneaks up on him and briefly moves his hair aside, reacting with a satisfied exclamation, but what she sees remains unknown to the viewer.
Duero's character also shows significant development through his analytical work. He makes an important discovery concerning the heritage of Hibiki Tokai, a finding that has substantial implications for understanding the connections between the men and women in their universe. His growth is further illustrated by his evolving comfort with the female crew members, moving from a somewhat awkward outsider to an integrated and trusted member of the Nirvana's family.
Regarding his abilities, beyond his evident and exceptional medical skills, Duero is highly intelligent and analytical, using these traits to solve complex problems and uncover hidden truths. A distinctive visual characteristic is that he is always seen with his hair obscuring the right side of his face, a trait explicitly referenced as a running visual mystery within the series.
