TV-Series
Description
Buzam A. Calessa, most commonly referred to as BC, serves as the second-in-command of the battleship Nirvana. She is a woman of tall stature with long, dark hair, typically seen on the bridge in a standard-issue uniform, and she wears a distinctive green jewel-like device on a necklace. Her age is 28 years, and she stands approximately 173 centimeters tall.

Her personality is defined by an austere, all-business demeanor. As a skilled tactician, she gives orders firmly and decisively, presenting herself as a strict and somewhat workaholic figure who constantly monitors data and reviews the crew's performance. Despite her strict exterior, she genuinely looks after the general welfare of the crew and maintains a high degree of loyalty to the ship's elderly captain, Magno Vivan.

A significant aspect of BC's background is the secret she harbors. It is revealed in Vandread: The Second Stage that she is not originally the woman she appears to be. Her real name is Tenmei Uragasumi, and she was originally a male commander of the Intelligence division from the male planet of Taraaku. As part of a deep-cover spy mission to gather information on the female planet of Mejale, he underwent a complete sex change and utilized a voice modulator disguised as the jewel on her necklace to pass as a female member of the Nirvana crew.

Throughout the series, BC is occasionally seen acting suspiciously, such as discreetly taking a data disc from the bridge's database, hinting at her covert mission. However, her motivations shift due to her experiences. The bonds she forms with the crew, particularly her deep respect and affection for Captain Magno Vivan, cause her to question her original allegiance. Ultimately, despite being exposed as a spy, she chooses to remain loyal to the Nirvana. Captain Magno forgives her for her deception, allowing her to keep her position as second-in-command under the specific condition that she continues to exist as "BC".

In terms of abilities, BC is recognized as an exceptional strategist responsible for coordinating the ship's combat operations and directing the Dread pilots during attacks. She is also proficient in close-quarters combat, with her preferred weapon of choice being a whip, which she wields with flexibility and dexterity. Her role in the story is primarily that of a reliable leader and authority figure on the bridge, whose hidden past creates a central point of conflict and resolution regarding themes of identity and loyalty. In the final battles, she commands the Nirvana and is integral to the crew's operations.
