Description
Misty Cornwell is a young female character introduced at the start of Vandread: The Second Stage. She is discovered by the crew of the Nirvana inside a human-sized survival pod after a skirmish with Harvester units. Chronologically, Misty is fourteen years old, but she has spent an additional sixty-three years in cryogenic sleep, making her actual birth date much earlier. She has very long blue hair and red eyes.

Born on the planet Pluto within the same solar system as Earth, Misty comes from a society where men and women lived together in the traditional sense. This background gives her a natural familiarity with concepts such as boyfriend and girlfriend relationships, romantic courtship, and the everyday dynamics between the sexes. In contrast, the all-female crew of Mejare has no frame of reference for such ideas, and Misty’s casual, open manner regarding romance both confuses them and sparks jealousy in Dita, who harbors feelings for Hibiki.

Misty is a capable cook, a skill she shares with Dita, and she uses both her culinary talent and her knowledge of cross-gender relationships to her advantage. Her initial motivation is survival and integration into the Nirvana crew after losing her own vessel. She becomes a conduit for vital information about Earth and the greater threat of the Harvesters, helping the crew understand the true scale of the crisis they face. Her personal motivation also involves forming a connection with Hibiki, the male protagonist, whom she finds appealing.

Over the course of the story, Misty serves as a romantic rival to Dita. However, she also functions as a catalyst for Dita’s emotional growth. Misty eventually recognizes that Hibiki’s heart lies with Dita and willingly steps back from pursuing him. In doing so, she helps Dita come to terms with her own romantic feelings for Hibiki. Her role in the narrative is thus twofold: she provides crucial plot information about the outside world and acts as a mirror that forces Dita to acknowledge her true emotions.

Misty does not pilot a Vandread or possess any combat-oriented abilities. Her notable strengths lie in her social intuition, her cooking, and her adaptability to the mixed-gender environment of the Nirvana. She represents a bridge between the segregated societies of Taraak and Mejeer and the mixed-gender world that once existed on Earth. Her presence introduces the crew to a more conventional understanding of romance while also advancing the overarching plot about the Harvester threat.
