Description
Gioconda is a character who appears as a primary antagonist in the Slayers Revolution anime series. She is a powerful and influential noble, holding the title of Marquess within the Kingdom of Ruvinagald. Gioconda is a woman of high status with an overbearing and imposing demeanor, standing as one of the key shadowy figures driving the events of the story.

Her background is marked by extreme cruelty and corruption. Gioconda had four husbands, all of whom she personally killed in duels within an underground coliseum she had built under her castle for her own entertainment. Her most significant crime, however, occurred during a plague known as the Durum sickness that devastated the neighboring kingdom of Taforashia. When multiple countries, including Ruvinagald and Saillune, sent relief supplies, Gioconda stole the entirety of the aid for her own purposes. This act of embezzlement led directly to Taforashia's downfall, forcing the sage Rezo to seal the entire kingdom and its people in a state of suspended animation to save them from total annihilation.

Gioconda's personality is defined by her ambition, corruption, and a complete lack of remorse for her heinous actions. She is shown to be casually dismissive of the suffering she caused, claiming that because Taforashia had no cure for the plague, the supplies would have been useless and that she put them to better use herself. Her motivations throughout the series are primarily self-serving. She seeks to gain power and wealth through any means necessary, most notably by pursuing the powerful Sword of Light that belongs to Pokota, the prince of Taforashia. To achieve her goals, she conducts unethical experiments with Zanaffar armor, a powerful and nearly invincible magical armor originally from Taforashia. Her initial experiments involved placing the armor on animals, which resulted in the creation of incomplete magical weapons known as magic tanks, which she then planned to sell for profit.

In the story, Gioconda serves as a major obstacle for the protagonist Lina Inverse and her companions. She commands several powerful subordinates, including the beastman Duclis, who helps her with the Zanaffar experiments, and the mysterious assassin Zuuma. She is also accompanied by Ozel, a magical doll with its own ego who serves as her maid. Furthermore, she has a cooperative relationship with the powerful mazoku priest Xellos, who is monitoring her activities on behalf of his master, though he takes orders from no human. Her key relationships are defined by manipulation and mutual benefit. Duclis works with her to acquire the Zanaffar armor for his own revenge against the world, but this alliance is built on lies, as Gioconda withholds the fact that she is the true cause of Taforashia's destruction.

Throughout the series, Gioconda displays notable personal abilities. She is a highly skilled swordswoman, capable of fighting on par with Gourry Gabriev, a master swordsman recognized as being in the first-class line of fighters in the world. She accomplishes this feat even while wearing a restrictive dress that hinders movement. Her combat prowess is further evidenced by her history of killing her own husbands in duels. Despite her skills, Gioconda's development culminates in her downfall. When Duclis finally learns the truth that she was the one who stole Taforashia's lifeline, he turns against her. In a final act of revenge, Duclis uses the Zanaffar armor she was wearing to transform her into a host for a demonic beast, which ultimately causes her death. The Zanaffar creature she becomes is later destroyed by Lina Inverse.
