Philionel El Di Seyruun, often referred to simply as Phil, is the crown prince of the Holy Kingdom of Seyruun. Although his father, King Eldoran Seyruun, is technically still the sovereign, the king is old, sickly, and confined to bed, so Philionel effectively runs the country in his place. He is the member of the royal family most trusted to eventually take the throne, having survived numerous assassination attempts over the years.
Philionel's family history is marked by loss and division. He has two daughters: Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun, the youngest, and Gracia Ul Naga Seyruun, the elder, who later becomes known as the wandering sorceress Naga the White Serpent. His wife was killed by an assassin years before the events of the series, and Gracia left the family as a result of that tragedy.
