Description
Philionel El Di Seyruun, often referred to simply as Phil, is the crown prince of the Holy Kingdom of Seyruun. Although his father, King Eldoran Seyruun, is technically still the sovereign, the king is old, sickly, and confined to bed, so Philionel effectively runs the country in his place. He is the member of the royal family most trusted to eventually take the throne, having survived numerous assassination attempts over the years.

Philionel's family history is marked by loss and division. He has two daughters: Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun, the youngest, and Gracia Ul Naga Seyruun, the elder, who later becomes known as the wandering sorceress Naga the White Serpent. His wife was killed by an assassin years before the events of the series, and Gracia left the family as a result of that tragedy. Philionel also has two brothers, Christopher Wil Brogg Seyruun and Randionel Seyruun, and a nephew named Alfred Seyruun. Some of his own relatives have been involved in plots against him, reflecting the political instability and ambition surrounding the Seyruun succession.

In personality, Philionel is defined above all by his intense belief in justice, a trait he shares with his younger daughter Amelia. He declares himself a pacifist and has devoted his life to that principle, yet his sense of righteousness consistently overrides his stated pacifism. Whenever he encounters what he regards as injustice, he does not hesitate to act with overwhelming force. This contradiction is a core part of his character: he speaks in grand, enthusiastic terms about justice and peace, then responds to wrongdoers with decisive and destructive physical combat. He is generally warm, loud, and larger than life, and his passionate proclamations about justice are a recurring part of his presence.

His primary motivation is the defense of justice and the protection of the innocent, both in his personal actions and in his governance of Seyruun. His self-proclaimed pacifism appears to be a genuine attempt to live by his moral ideals, even though his commitment to punishing evil regularly pulls him into violent confrontations. As the de facto ruler of the kingdom, he also carries the motivation of maintaining stability and safety for his people.

Within the story of the Slayers anime, including The Slayers Revolution, Philionel serves as a supporting character tied to the main group through his daughter Amelia, who travels with the protagonists. His role typically involves representing royal authority in Seyruun, assisting the heroes when their adventures bring them into contact with the kingdom, and personally intervening when threats arise. He also functions as a source of both practical help and comic relief, since his enthusiasm for justice often places him in situations that clash humorously with his claims of being a pacifist.

His most important relationship is with Amelia, who inherited his strong moral convictions and his desire to fight for what is right. His elder daughter Gracia is more estranged from the family, having left after their mother's death. With the main characters, particularly Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev, Philionel acts as a well-disposed royal ally who supports their efforts and occasionally becomes directly involved in their conflicts. Within his own family, he has faced hostility from relatives seeking power, including an assassination plot tied to his nephew, which places his personal story within the broader political struggles of Seyruun.

Philionel does not undergo a major personal transformation over the course of the series. Instead, he remains consistent in his established traits: the tension between his pacifist ideals and his forceful methods, his devotion to his daughter, and his responsibilities as the ruler in all but name. His appearances in The Slayers Revolution and the following Evolution-R continue to present him in this same role, as a loyal and physically imposing royal figure whose belief in justice shapes his every interaction.

In terms of abilities, Philionel is an unusual member of the Seyruun royal family because he has no magical powers at all. Instead, he possesses tremendous physical strength, which he channels through attacks named after virtuous concepts, including Pacifist Crush, Kindness to All Creatures Kick, Benevolent Giant Swing, and Goodwill Towards Man Smash. His raw power is great enough to destroy lesser demons, making him a formidable close-combat fighter even without magic. This combination of royal standing, overwhelming strength, and an unshakable belief in justice allows him to serve as both a protector of his kingdom and a reliable source of support for the heroes.
