Description
Akihiko Usami, often called by the nickname Usagi, is a central character and a highly successful novelist. At twenty-eight years old and born on March third, he is the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Naomori Award, which he won at seventeen. He graduated at the top of his class from Teito University’s law school. Despite his fame and formal, elegant appearance, his personality is complex: he can be childish, brash, and possessive, yet also genuinely kind. His childhood was marked by loneliness and isolation; he spent much of his time writing alone in notebooks and experienced the trauma of being molested by a male tutor. He lived in England for ten years as a child, which influenced his formal style and left him fluent in English. Coming from a wealthy but dysfunctional family, he has a strained relationship with his father, Fuyuhiko, and his half-brother, Haruhiko. For a long time, Akihiko harbored an unrequited love for his best friend, Takahiro Takahashi. He writes popular Boys’ Love novels under the pen name Yayoi Akikawa, originally inspired by those feelings. His life changes when he agrees to tutor Takahiro’s younger brother, Misaki Takahashi. Misaki’s empathy for Akihiko’s hidden pain allows Akihiko to realize his true affections have shifted, and Misaki becomes his lover and live-in partner. In this relationship, Akihiko is intensely possessive, overbearing, and often perverted, leading Misaki to call him an “old pervert,” but he also prioritizes Misaki’s happiness and well-being. His love for Misaki changes his writing style from sad and depressing to softer and more enjoyable. Akihiko is notoriously bad at meeting deadlines, causing frequent conflict with his editor, Eri Aikawa. He is practically helpless with household chores, leaving Misaki to care for them. He has a childlike obsession with collecting toys and stuffed bears, often naming the bears Suzuki, and he acquires pets like marimo and eels that Misaki ends up looking after. His childhood friend is Hiroki Kamijou, who was once in love with him, and Akihiko is supportive of Hiroki’s relationship with Nowaki Kusama. Driven by a deep-seated fear of being alone, Akihiko’s anxiety over losing Misaki fuels his controlling behavior. Over time, he grows more open and vulnerable, even rejecting a substantial inheritance to affirm his independence and his life with Misaki. His notable abilities include extraordinary intelligence, making him an effective tutor, and his innate literary talent.
