TV-Series
Description
Maru is one of two artificial beings who serve as assistants in Yuko Ichihara’s wish-granting shop. She and her companion, Moro, were created by Yuko and are often described as soulless, meaning they cannot leave the premises of the shop. Their full names are Marudashi and Morodashi, both of which translate to “completely exposed.” Maru has blue eyes and long, curly blue hair that she wears in pigtails, while her twin Moro has short pink hair.

In terms of personality, Maru appears to be the more mature of the pair, though her temper flares more quickly than Moro’s. She is more skilled at games and household chores and becomes frustrated when Moro outdoes her or resorts to cheating. Like Moro, Maru often speaks in unison with her twin and repeats the words of others, giving their interactions a playful, synchronized quality. They are energetic and mischievous, frequently teasing the shop’s assistant, Kimihiro Watanuki, and distracting him from his duties.

Maru’s motivations are tied directly to Yuko’s shop. She exists to help sustain the shop and serve Yuko’s needs, performing tasks such as guiding visitors and maintaining the space. After Yuko’s death in the narrative, Maru and Moro briefly vanish, but Yuko uses the last of her power to bring them back. From that point onward, they transfer their loyalty to Watanuki, who inherits the shop. Maru’s role in the story is primarily that of a supporting character, providing comic relief and a constant presence within the shop while also contributing to the running of Yuko’s strange establishment.

Her key relationships are with Moro, with whom she is nearly inseparable, and with Yuko and later Watanuki, whom she serves faithfully. Her bond with Watanuki grows over time, and she comes to tease him affectionately while also helping with his chores. Maru has no significant development arc of her own, but her shift in allegiance after Yuko’s passing marks a notable change in her circumstances.

Maru’s notable abilities include her connection to the shop itself—her presence helps maintain its existence—and her inability to leave it due to her lack of a soul. She also possesses a basic competence in domestic tasks and games. Her magical nature is implied but never fully detailed, as she is an artificial being created by Yuko rather than a natural spirit or human.
