Description
Mitsuyoshi Jubei Yagyu is a supporting character in Shura no Toki: Age of Chaos, representing the historical Yagyu clan of swordsmen. He is the son of Yagyu Munenori, the master swordsman and close advisor to the Tokugawa shoguns, and was born into the Yagyu family's ancestral lands in Nara. In the series, Jubei is depicted as a highly skilled and prideful swordsman who serves as an instructor to the shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. His role in the story is defined by his encounter with the Mutsu clan, the narrative's central martial lineage. He engages in a significant duel with a member of the Mutsu family, a fight that is pivotal to his character; during this brutal contest, he loses one eye, giving him the iconic appearance of a one-eyed swordsman. This defeat and injury drive his motivations, as he becomes determined to understand the Mutsu clan's fighting style and to prove his own skill. His personality is that of a dedicated and serious practitioner of the sword, honorable in his own way but also bound by his family's duty to the shogunate. He respects strength and is deeply affected by his defeat, which shapes his actions later in the arc. His key relationships involve his father, Munenori, and the Mutsu fighters he faces, particularly Yagumo Mutsu. His development stems from this loss, leading him to reflect on his own path as a swordsman. Notable abilities include mastery of the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu style of swordsmanship, which he attempts to use against the Mutsu clan's unpredictable and brutal techniques.
