TV-Series
Description
Albert de Morcerf is the young viscount and the primary viewpoint character of Gankutsuou, serving as the lens through which the audience experiences the Count of Monte Cristo’s arrival and his complex web of revenge. He is the only son of General Fernand de Morcerf and his wife Mercédès, living a life of privilege among the Parisian aristocracy in a futuristic 51st century. At the start of the story, Albert is a sixteen-year-old nobleman, described as being of average height with untidy short brown hair and blue eyes. He is still growing into his frame and is somewhat stocky, hinting at a future broad-shouldered build, and he has a small mole beside his left eye.

Albert’s personality is defined by a passionate and trusting nature. He is presented as a lovable, if somewhat naive, individual who genuinely looks for and believes in the goodness of others, a trait that often leaves him vulnerable to manipulation. He wears his heart on his sleeve, reacting with immediate and open emotion whether he is joyful, angry, or sad, and he is known to have a quick temper and touchy pride that can lead to rash, impulsive decisions. Despite his impulsive tendencies, he was raised with the manners and social conventions of a noble, though he can sometimes forget formalities when his curiosity or emotions get the better of him. He has a somewhat oblivious streak, often failing to notice the romantic affections of those close to him, such as his childhood friend and fiancee, Eugénie.

Throughout the series, Albert is driven by a strong belief in fate and a deep desire to be in control of his own destiny. He is highly curious and becomes utterly fascinated by the enigmatic Count of Monte Cristo after a chance encounter on the moon, an attraction that draws him into the Count’s orbit. His motivations are rooted in loyalty and friendship; once his loyalty is given, it is very strong, which makes his inevitable disillusionment with the Count a central emotional conflict of the story. Although he initially appears as an idealistic and somewhat sheltered teenager who wishes only for adventure, his role evolves as the Count’s schemes dismantle his family, forcing Albert to confront the darker realities of his father's past and the devastating consequences of revenge.

Albert’s most significant relationship is, of course, with the Count of Monte Cristo, who uses Albert’s trust and connections to gain access to the Parisian elite whom he intends to destroy. Albert views the Count as a charismatic and fascinating friend, developing a strong emotional attachment that others, including Franz, find concerning. His other key relationship is with his best friend, Baron Franz d’Epinay, who acts as a more cautious and perceptive foil to Albert’s naivety; Franz is often wary of the Count’s influence and tries to protect Albert. Albert is also engaged to Eugénie de Danglars, though the arrangement was made by their parents. While he cares for her as a dear friend, he does not initially see her in a romantic light, and his understanding of his own feelings for her evolves as the story progresses. A notable relationship also forms with Peppo, a bandit who initially deceives Albert but later becomes a part of his household, showcasing his forgiving nature.

Albert undergoes significant development throughout the series, shifting from a naive, adventure-seeking youth to a character forced to mature in the face of tragedy. While his trusting nature is exploited to move the plot forward, he ultimately becomes the central figure who challenges the Count’s path of vengeance. In a climactic act driven not by violence but by compassion, Albert embraces the Count, an act of pure love and friendship that exorcises the demonic entity, Gankutsuou, from the Count’s body. This act demonstrates his core belief in redemption over retribution. After the events of the story, Albert leaves Paris, choosing a life of self-imposed solitude and travel away from his former life. As a physically normal human, Albert possesses no supernatural powers, but he has practical abilities such as fencing, shooting a gun, and driving a motorcycle, and he appears to have a degree of mechanical talent.
