Description
Marulk serves as an apprentice to the White Whistle delver Ozen at the Seeker Camp on the Abyss's second layer. Despite his youth, this direct mentorship earned him the rank of Blue Whistle. He originates from royalty in the western country of Jisweku, where he was a "child of the shadows" – genetically vulnerable to sunlight with a life expectancy under ten years. During this time, he wore specialized "Moon Outfit" garments for sun protection. His life changed drastically following an airship crash within the Abyss that killed his father and the crew; Ozen discovered him in the wreckage and took him as her disciple. His sunlight sensitivity intensified afterward, preventing any return to the surface.
Physically, Marulk has short blue hair and a rounded face. His feminine traits and consistent maid attire frequently lead others to mistake him for a girl, though he is male. While the specific reason for his clothing choice is not stated, Ozen is implied to have influenced it. The attire incorporates functional elements like head pockets holding lenses and work equipment.
His primary duty at the camp is operating the telescope, maintaining constant surveillance of the surroundings. When delvers approach, he lowers the camp's gondola to permit entry. Marulk is characterized as shy yet polite, often expressing loneliness due to limited peer interaction. He experiences fear of Ozen at times but maintains deep trust in her. This complex dynamic is evident when he disobeys her direct order to stay put during her confrontation with Reg, instead seeking help from other camp members. Ozen later commended his judgment while still enforcing punishment for the disobedience.
He formed a friendship with Riko and Reg during their stay, guiding them through the camp and witnessing their survival training under Ozen. He later bid them an emotional farewell as they descended deeper into the Abyss. On an undefined occasion, he met Nat while on an errand in Orth.
The spin-off "Marulk's Daily Life" depicts routine aspects of his existence at the camp, showing him performing tasks for Ozen like fulfilling requests, running errands, cleaning, and handling maintenance duties. One episode includes flashbacks to his initial rescue and adoption by Ozen. Trained by Ozen, Marulk possesses foundational delving skills appropriate for a Blue Whistle, demonstrating sufficient competence to survive independently for short periods in the second layer's less hazardous zones.
