Description
Momo Hinamori is the lieutenant of the Fifth Division of the Gotei 13, originally serving under Captain Sōsuke Aizen and later under Captain Shinji Hirako. She grew up in Junrinan, District One of Rukongai, alongside Tōshirō Hitsugaya, with whom she formed a close childhood friendship. She called him Shiro-chan while he often teased her in return. After enrolling in the Shinigami Academy, she excelled in kidō and formed lasting friendships with fellow students Izuru Kira and Renji Abarai. Upon graduation, she was recruited directly into the Fifth Division by Aizen, and through dedicated effort she eventually attained the rank of lieutenant.

Hinamori is an upbeat, easygoing person who generally gets along with almost everyone she meets. She is highly trusting and impulsive, but also notably naïve. Her deepest motivation is loyalty to those she admires, and this loyalty becomes both her strength and her greatest vulnerability. She holds an intense admiration for Aizen, whom she idolized to the point of becoming a shinigami specifically to serve under him. This devotion makes her vulnerable to manipulation, and when Aizen fakes his death and later reveals his betrayal, she suffers a severe psychological breakdown, refusing to believe he acted intentionally. The trauma of being deceived and physically harmed by the person she most trusted defines a large part of her arc.

Her role in the story is that of a supporting character whose experiences highlight the emotional cost of Aizen’s schemes. During the Soul Society arc, her confusion leads her to attack Hitsugaya, believing him to be the traitor. In the Fake Karakura Town arc, she finally faces the truth and chooses to fight against Aizen’s forces, though she still struggles with conflicted feelings. During the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, she appears more composed and capable, fighting alongside her new captain, Shinji Hirako, and demonstrating greater emotional stability.

Hinamori’s key relationships shape her development. Her bond with Hitsugaya remains strong despite the strains Aizen placed on it; he acts as a protective figure, while she gradually learns to stand on her own. With Hirako, she experiences a healthy captain‑subordinate relationship built on honesty, which helps her recover. She shares close bonds with Kira and Abarai from their academy days, and she develops a supportive friendship with Nanao Ise, exchanging book recommendations. Rangiku Matsumoto also serves as a comforting presence, offering sisterly advice and companionship.

Her notable abilities center on kidō and her fire‑type zanpakutō, Tobiume, which releases with the command “Snap” (Hajike). In its shikai form, the blade becomes a straight sword with multiple prongs, acting as a focus for her spiritual energy. She can launch concentrated energy bursts and compressed spheres of flame, capable of breaching walls and cratering floors. During the Thousand-Year Blood War, she gains the ability to rapidly fire multiple fireballs. Hinamori is a highly skilled kidō user, able to cast multiple spells simultaneously without incantation, layer binding spells within destruction spells, and combine hadō with bakudō. Her repertoire includes Hadō #31 Shakkahō, Bakudō #26 Kyokkō, Bakudō #37 Tsuriboshi, and the combined technique Hakufuku, which induces sleep. She also possesses healing kidō. She has not achieved bankai, but her mastery of shikai and kidō makes her a capable lieutenant. Throughout the series, she survives numerous severe injuries, reflecting a resilient constitution that allows her to continue fighting despite immense physical and emotional trauma.
