Description
Barragan Luisenbarn is a major antagonist in the series, serving as the Segunda Espada, or the second-ranked Espada, within Sosuke Aizen's army of Arrancar. Before Aizen's arrival in Hueco Mundo, the vast desert dimension of Hollows, Barragan was its undisputed king and the original ruler of its fortress, Las Noches. His name carries the meaning of "God-King," a title that reflects his former absolute authority.

In terms of appearance, Barragan looks like a muscular yet elderly man with dark skin, a large white mustache, and short white hair. His aged face is marked by prominent scars, one crossing over his right eye which he typically keeps closed, and another running down his chin. The remnants of his Hollow mask take the form of a five-pointed crown that sits atop his head, symbolizing his royal status. His attire is regal and barbaric, consisting of a white long coat with black fur trim around the collar and edges, along with golden wristbands and a large, ornate belt. His Zanpakuto is sealed in the form of a massive double-bladed battle axe.

Barragan's personality is defined by his immense pride, arrogance, and authoritarian nature. Having once been the absolute ruler of Hueco Mundo, he views all other beings, including fellow Espada and Shinigami, as insignificant insects beneath his notice. He demands to be treated as royalty, with his loyal Fraccion addressing him as "Your Majesty". His authority is such that he does not even carry his own Zanpakuto, as his subordinates attend to it and his throne. While he possesses a calm and calculated demeanor, capable of quickly analyzing battle situations, he is also easily enraged when his pride is wounded or his plans are thwarted, flying into a blind fury.

His primary motivation is deeply rooted in his past. As the former King of Hueco Mundo, Barragan ruled over a court of Hollows from his open-air palace, growing bored from a lack of worthy challengers. This ended when Aizen, accompanied by Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tosen, invaded his throne room. After Aizen used his Zanpakuto's hypnotic abilities to slaughter Barragan's guards, he overpowered the King and forced him into servitude. Barragan was then transformed into an Arrancar and made the Segunda Espada. Although he outwardly obeys Aizen, he harbors a deep-seated grudge and secretly awaits the opportunity to exact revenge on the one who usurped his throne.

In the story, Barragan plays a significant role during the Fake Karakura Town arc. When Aizen and his top three Espada arrive to wage war on the Gotei 13, Barragan immediately takes command of the Arrancar forces after Aizen is temporarily sealed. He demonstrates his tactical mind by deducing the existence of the four pillars sustaining the fake Karakura Town and sending his forces to destroy them. His primary battle is against Captain Soi Fon of the 2nd Division and her lieutenant, Marechiyo Omaeda. Throughout the fight, Barragan remains seated on a throne of bones, treating the conflict as an annoyance until his Fraccion are defeated, at which point he engages the captains himself.

Barragan's key relationships are defined by his superiority complex. He commands a large Fraccion of six Arrancar—Poww, Cuuhlhourne, Avirama, Findor, Ggio, and Nirgge—who serve him with unwavering loyalty and fear. He holds a dismissive and contemptuous view of his fellow Espada, including the Primera Espada, Coyote Starrk, whom he openly challenges for leadership. His most significant relationship is with Aizen, whom he despises as a usurper but is forced to obey out of sheer powerlessness. This simmering hatred defines his internal state, as he constantly schemes for a chance to reclaim his former glory.

Development for Barragan is minimal, as his character remains static until his defeat. He is so consumed by his pride in his absolute power that he cannot conceive of its failure. This hubris leads to his downfall when he faces Hachigen Ushoda, a former lieutenant of the Kidō Corps. Barragan's power, Respira, which ages and decays anything it touches, is turned against him when Hachigen teleports a portion of it inside his own body. For the first time, the king of Hueco Mundo experiences the effects of his own deadly ability, aging and crumbling to dust. In his final moments, he casts his axe at Aizen in a last, futile act of defiance, cursing the man who stole his kingdom before disintegrating completely.

Barragan's abilities are among the most formidable in the series, as he represents the aspect of death by aging. His primary power is time manipulation centered on senescence, the process of growing old. Even in his sealed state, he projects a field called Senescencia that slows the passage of time for anything approaching him, drastically reducing the speed of incoming attacks. Furthermore, anything he touches ages rapidly; he demonstrates this by simply placing a hand on Soi Fon's arm and causing her bone to decay and snap from old age.

His true power is unleashed with his Resurrección, activated by the command "Rot" or "Decay," which transforms him into the "Arrogante" (or "Skull Emperor"). In this form, Barragan becomes a skeleton draped in a royal cloak, resembling a personification of death itself. His crown becomes more elaborate, and he wields a massive axe called Gran Caída. His signature technique in this form is Respira, a miasmic, smoky breath that spreads outward and ages everything it contacts at an exponentially accelerated rate. It is so potent that it can decay steel, stone, and even energy-based Kidō spells in an instant. He claims this power is absolute because, as he states, all things, from living beings to the sun and moon, are destined to age and die. This absolute power, however, is also his ultimate weakness, as it can be turned against him.
