Description
Don Kan'onji, whose real name is Misaomaru Kan'onji, is a popular spirit medium and the flamboyant host of a television show focused on paranormal investigations. He is a tall man of 188 centimeters, recognizable by his signature dark round sunglasses, elaborate long coats or capes, distinctive hats, and often his tightly braided hair. His entire appearance is designed to be as theatrical and eye-catching as possible, befitting his larger-than-life public persona.

His personality is as bold as his wardrobe. Kan'onji is loud, brash, and supremely confident, introducing himself as the New Century's Premier Spiritualist. He is known for his trademark pose where he crosses both arms over his chest, curls his fingers, and throws his head back to let out a resounding, deep laugh of "BOHAHAHAHA!" This pose, along with catchphrases like "Smells like bad spirits!" and "Spirits are always with you!!", are imitated by his many fans. Despite his showy and often comical demeanor, Kan'onji is genuinely well-meaning. He possesses a strong, if somewhat misguided, sense of justice and a deep commitment to being a hero. This stems from his belief that as a public figure watched by millions, including a significant portion of Japan's population, he has a responsibility to demonstrate courage to the children in his audience. He firmly believes that a hero should never run from a battle, as that would set a poor example.

Kan'onji's role in the story begins when his television crew arrives in Karakura Town for a taping. During this event, Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki witness Kan'onji attempting to exorcise a spirit using his signature staff. Both are horrified to realize that his method, which he believed sent spirits to heaven, actually accelerates their transformation into Hollows. This confrontation reveals a critical flaw in his past work and leads to a profound moment of character development. Upon learning the truth about his actions, Kan'onji is deeply mortified, grieving for the spirits he inadvertently harmed. However, rather than retreat, he resolves to face the resultant Hollow alongside Ichigo. This experience marks a turning point, as he becomes one of the few humans aware of the true nature of spirits, Hollows, and Soul Reapers. While he maintains his television career, his knowledge of the spiritual world steadily increases after this encounter.

His key relationships are primarily formed around the Kurosaki family and their allies. He declares Ichigo to be his number one pupil, an offer that Ichigo does not take seriously, but Kan'onji persistently refers to him as such. He shares a surprising camaraderie with Ichigo's father, Isshin, who is an enthusiastic fan of Kan'onji's show and shares his taste for flashy attire. He also recruits Karin Kurosaki, along with Jinta Hanakari and Ururu Tsumugiya from the Urahara Shop, to join his "Karakura Superheroes" team. This was an initiative to boost his show's declining ratings, but it also serves as a way to defend Karakura Town from Hollows in the absence of the Soul Reapers.

Kan'onji is not a powerful fighter, but he does possess more spiritual energy than the average human, which allows him to see spirits and withstand high-level spiritual pressure. His most notable ability is the Kan'onball, his self-proclaimed final super attack. He manifests this ability as a small, slow-moving orb of blue or golden spiritual energy that explodes with surprising force upon impact. He can also fire an enhanced version called the Golden Kan'onball, which launches two of these energy spheres simultaneously. For close-quarters combat, he wields a Super Spirit Stick, a cane infused with his spiritual energy, though it is not particularly durable against truly powerful opponents. Throughout the series, from his initial folly to later standing up against formidable enemies like Sōsuke Aizen, Don Kan'onji remains a consistent source of comic relief, yet one who is always driven by a sincere, if theatrical, desire to protect others.
