Description
Maki Ichinose is a character who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Bleach, specifically within the narrative arc centered on the Bounts. A former officer of the Gotei 13, his history is defined by a profound sense of duty and a personal code of justice that ultimately sets him on a path away from Soul Society.
Ichinose once served with honor in the 11th Division under its former captain, Kenpachi Kiganjo. He held deep respect for his captain, believing that those with great power should use it for noble and just purposes. This belief system was shattered when Kenpachi Zaraki arrived and, in a formal challenge witnessed by two hundred Shinigami, killed Captain Kiganjo to claim the title of Kenpachi and leadership of the division. Unable to accept a captain who viewed combat solely as a form of self-gratifying entertainment, Ichinose confronted Zaraki in a duel. The new captain easily disarmed him and dismissed his challenge, advising him to "stand for himself". Following this humiliation, Ichinose formally left the Soul Society, becoming a ronin, or masterless, Shinigami.
After leaving, Ichinose wandered until he reached the human world. In a weakened state, he encountered a powerful Hollow that nearly killed him. He was rescued by Jin Kariya, the leader of the Bounts, who subdued the creature and allowed Ichinose to deliver the final blow. In Kariya, Ichinose saw a reflection of his former captain—a person with a strong will and a grand ideology. Swearing absolute loyalty, he dedicated his significant abilities to Kariya's cause. His personality is characterized by a quiet intensity, a strong sense of purpose, and unwavering loyalty, though he maintains a calm and analytical demeanor in combat, preferring to assess his opponent's abilities before engaging fully.
Within the Bount narrative, Ichinose serves as Kariya's most trusted and capable lieutenant. His primary motivations are twofold: to serve the vision of Jin Kariya, whom he believes will create a better world, and to eventually settle his grudge with Kenpachi Zaraki. He utilizes his knowledge of Soul Society to aid the Bounts' invasion, infiltrating the Seireitei and manipulating data to provoke Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi into providing a tool necessary for the Bounts to enter. His key relationships are defined by loyalty and enmity. He is fiercely devoted to Kariya but retains a deep-seated, simmering hatred for Kenpachi Zaraki. He also shared a brief camaraderie with Kaname Tōsen, as both witnessed Zaraki's violent ascension and were disturbed by it.
Ichinose undergoes significant development, driven by his long-awaited confrontation with Zaraki. Despite training for years to exact revenge, Zaraki defeats him once more. In their final exchange, Zaraki forces Ichinose to confront the truth that he has lost his way, fighting for the will of others—first his old captain and then Kariya—rather than for his own convictions. This realization rekindles his original desire to see Soul Society improved rather than destroyed. He later confronts Kariya, threatening to oppose him if his plan is only destruction. However, Kariya, having already achieved his goal, fatally stabs Ichinose, ending his life. Even in death, his fractured Zanpakutō remains, acting as a lightning rod to save Ichigo Kurosaki from one of Kariya's attacks.
Despite not holding a rank within the Gotei 13, Ichinose possessed spiritual power and combat skill comparable to a captain-level officer. He was highly proficient in swordsmanship, Flash Steps, and Kidō, able to hold his own against powerful fighters like Ichigo Kurosaki and Tōshirō Hitsugaya. His primary weapon is his Zanpakutō, Nijigasumi, which translates to "Rainbow Mist". Its Shikai is activated with the command "Shine brightly," and it grants him the ability to manipulate light. This allows for a versatile array of techniques, including rendering himself invisible, creating blinding flashes to disorient opponents, weaving powerful illusions, and forming blades of pure light that can be used as projectiles. Nijigasumi's most devastating technique is Saigyoku Nijigasumi, or the "Swallowing Orb of Rainbow Mist," which envelops a target in a sphere of compressed light that then collapses inward, crushing everything inside with immense force.
