Description
Mayuri Kurotsuchi is the captain of the 12th Division of the Gotei 13 and the second president of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. His background begins over a century before the main events of the story, when he was an inmate in the Maggots Nest, the most dangerous prisoner held there due to his utter disregard for life and willingness to conduct unethical experiments. He was freed by Kisuke Urahara, who offered him a position in the newly formed Research Institute. Initially refusing, Mayuri accepted when Urahara pointed out that he could eventually succeed him. After Urahara was forced into exile, Mayuri became captain of the 12th Division and took full control of the Institute.

Mayuri’s personality is defined by an obsessive, amoral pursuit of knowledge. He sees all living beings—including allies, enemies, and even himself—as mere objects for scientific study and experimentation. He is sadistic, cruel, and lacks empathy, often torturing opponents slowly while delivering lectures on the imperfections of nature. His motivations are driven entirely by curiosity and the desire to push the boundaries of science, regardless of ethical cost. He has little interest in the affairs of the Soul Society unless they relate to his research, though he will act when directly ordered or when he finds a subject that intrigues him.

In the story, Mayuri serves as a recurring ally to the protagonists, though his methods frequently put him at odds with the moral standards of other Soul Reapers. During the Soul Society invasion arc, he set traps for the intruders and fought Uryu Ishida, revealing that he had experimented on Uryu’s grandfather, Soken Ishida. In Hueco Mundo, he defeated the Espada Szayelaporro Granz by using a bacterium implanted in Uryu earlier to analyze Szayelaporro’s abilities, and he delivered a philosophical critique of seeking perfection. During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Mayuri played a major role in countering the Wandenreich’s zombie army, using his own revived Arrancar soldiers and a blood-altering serum to bring zombified captains under his control. He also fought the left arm of the Soul King, Pernida, and witnessed the sacrifice of his artificial daughter Nemu.

Key relationships include his artificial daughter and lieutenant, Nemu Kurotsuchi, whom he created through the Nemuri Project. He initially treated her with indifference and cruelty, but over time showed subtle signs of pride and even grief when she died, later creating a new artificial being named Nemuri Hachigo. His relationship with Kisuke Urahara is marked by rivalry and resentment, as he dislikes being seen as Urahara’s inferior and tries to surpass his predecessor’s achievements. With Uryu Ishida, Mayuri has a history of animosity due to his experiments on Quincy, but they have cooperated on occasion.

Mayuri undergoes subtle development. While he never abandons his cold, scientific worldview, he becomes more willing to work with others and shows a degree of care for his creations, particularly Nemu. He also demonstrates a capacity for long-term planning and adaptation, always preparing countermeasures for his opponents.

Mayuri’s abilities are extraordinary. He is a genius inventor and scientist, having created numerous drugs, devices, and body modifications. He has modified his own body extensively: his left arm can extend like a grappling hook, he can pull a scythe-like weapon from his ear, and he can liquify his body to escape harm. He is a master chemist, having developed drugs that alter perception of time, paralyze limbs, regenerate tissue, and control zombies. His Zanpakuto is Ashisogi Jizo. Its Shikai, released with the command Claw Out, transforms into a deformed trident that injects a poison that severs nerve signals, paralyzing the target while leaving them able to feel pain. Its Bankai, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo, appears as a giant caterpillar with a baby’s head and halo, which exhales a lethal poison derived from Mayuri’s blood. Over time, Mayuri has modified his Bankai to self-destruct if it attacks him, and he changes the poison each time he uses it. In his battle against Pernida, he revealed a further modified form, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo: Makai Fukuin Shōtai, a giant infant that can generate new variations of the Bankai tailored to the opponent. He is also proficient in kido and possesses high spiritual pressure.
