TV-Series
Description
Ginjou Kuugo is a human with Fullbring abilities and the leader of an organization called Xcution. He is a tall and muscular man with a calm demeanor, often dressed in a black coat with a fur collar and wearing a distinctive cross-shaped necklace. He has a known fondness for ramen and is generally cool-headed and patient.

His background is deeply intertwined with the Soul Society, as he holds the distinction of being the very first Substitute Shinigami in history. He was officially recognized and given a Substitute Shinigami Badge by Soul Society. However, his relationship with Soul Society soured dramatically. He eventually abandoned his post and went into hiding in the human world, developing a deep-seated grudge against the Shinigami. His antagonism was fueled by the belief that the Soul Society, particularly Captain Jushiro Ukitake, intended to use the Substitute Shinigami Badge as a tool for surveillance and control over their agents.

Ginjou is a highly manipulative individual, possessing a charm that allowed him to recruit other Fullbringers to his cause. He is willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve his goals, including orchestrating complex deceptions with his allies and even altering his own memories to maintain a cover story. His primary motivation is revenge against the Soul Society and the acquisition of power. To this end, he gathers a group of Fullbringers in Xcution, claiming they want to remove their own powers. In reality, he targets Ichigo Kurosaki, a human with inherent Shinigami powers, intending to train him to master his Fullbring only to steal that power once it is fully developed.

His role in the story is that of a primary antagonist during the Lost Agent arc. He initially presents himself as a mysterious but helpful ally to Ichigo, guiding him through the process of regaining his lost Shinigami abilities. After Ichigo successfully completes his Fullbring training, Ginjou reveals his true nature. He stabs Ichigo and steals his Fullbring power, transforming into a more powerful form and revealing his contempt for the Soul Society.

Key relationships define his character. His partnership with Shukuro Tsukishima, another powerful Fullbringer, is central to his plan, and he willingly allows Tsukishima to use his memory-manipulating abilities on him. His relationship with Ichigo is complex, shifting from a friendly mentor to a bitter enemy. However, in their final battle, a measure of mutual understanding emerges as Ichigo tries to comprehend Ginjou's anger and sense of betrayal. It is later revealed that his hatred for the Shinigami was further inflamed by a tragic incident where his friends were murdered by members of Soul Society, a truth that adds a layer of tragedy to his vendetta.

Ginjou undergoes significant development, transitioning from a figure of suspicion to a trusted ally and then to a full-fledged villain. His death comes at the hands of Ichigo, who has regained his true Shinigami powers. After being defeated, he questions his path and dies, wondering what might have been had their positions been different. Despite his crimes, Ichigo shows him compassion, bringing his body to the Soul Society and requesting a proper burial. Ginjou's story does not entirely end there, as he later appears in the Soul Society's Rukongai district, having been sent there after death alongside Tsukishima.

In terms of abilities, Ginjou is a master swordsman and Fullbringer. His Fullbring is channeled through his cross necklace, which can transform into a massive, cleaver-like greatsword called the Cross of Scaffold. This weapon can condense spiritual pressure to fire powerful energy slashes. A unique aspect of his power is its interaction with the Substitute Shinigami Badge; by merging the badge with his sword, he gains the ability to steal the Fullbring powers of other individuals. He demonstrated this by absorbing Ichigo's completed Fullbring, which allowed him to gain the ability to use techniques like Ichigo's signature Getsuga Tensho.

After stealing Ichigo's power, Ginjou can achieve a more advanced transformation that mimics a Shinigami's Bankai. In this state, his appearance changes drastically: his hair turns white, a cross-shaped pattern appears on his face, and he wears a form-fitting black and white skeletal armor. In this enhanced state, his power becomes akin to that of a Hollow, allowing him to even fire a Cero, a typical Arrancar ability. Beyond his offensive capabilities, he can also use Bringer Light to increase his speed and is noted for having significant endurance and spiritual power.
