Description
Nemu Kurotsuchi is a character from the anime and manga series Bleach. She serves as the lieutenant of the 12th Division of the Gotei 13 under Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Nemu is an artificial being created by Mayuri as the seventh successful subject of his Nemuri Project, which aimed to create new souls by combining gigai technology and mod soul technology. Her original designation was Nemuri Nanagō, meaning Sleeping Number Seven.

Nemu has a slender, well-endowed build with green eyes and black hair that is tied back in a long braid with slightly parted bangs. She typically wears a short black kimono over a white nagajuban. Her personality is introverted and melancholic, and she often remains silent in the presence of her captain. Despite being subjected to verbal and physical abuse by Mayuri, she demonstrates unwavering loyalty to him, largely out of gratitude for being brought into existence. At the same time, she possesses a compassion that her creator lacks, as seen when she saved Uryū Ishida's life by giving him an antidote to Mayuri's bankai poison as thanks for sparing Mayuri.

Nemu's motivations are primarily centered on serving Mayuri and carrying out his orders without question. However, she has shown the capacity to disobey commands when her creator's life is in immediate danger, acting on her own initiative to protect him. Her role in the story is that of a supporting lieutenant and lab assistant, often assisting in Mayuri's experiments and combat operations. Over the course of the series, Nemu transitions from a nearly invisible background figure to a character who makes a critical sacrifice during the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.

Key relationships include her creator and father, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, who considers her his greatest masterpiece but treats her as an expendable tool, though he secretly takes pride in her stability and feels she has been burdened too much. She also shares a brief but meaningful connection with Uryū Ishida, whom she aids after his battle with Mayuri. Near the end of the story, Nemu fights Pernida Parnkgjas, the left arm of the Soul King, and is consumed by it. Her internal composition, particularly a superhuman drug within her body, causes Pernida to undergo excessive evolution, leading to its destruction. Nemu's brain is preserved by Mayuri before being fully eaten, but her body is lost. After her death, Mayuri creates a new artificial soul named Nemuri Number Eight.

Nemu's notable abilities stem from her artificial design. Her body can withstand fatal injuries and is immune to Mayuri's various poisons, though she still feels pain. She carries antidotes and stores poisons and potions from Mayuri's research, making her dangerous to those who attack her internally. She can rotate her forearm at high speed to create a hand drill capable of piercing hard rock. Another technique, the Soul Reaper Gun, consumes six percent of her soul to fire a high-density spiritual bullet from her palm. Her fighting style incorporates capoeira-like martial arts and kido spells. Although she does not normally use a zanpakutō, an illustration reveals she possesses one in the form of a thin katana. Additionally, Mayuri can rapidly repair her injuries, allowing her to continue fighting or performing tasks.
