Description
Captain Kim Yongbi is the OPBF bantamweight champion and a former lieutenant in the Korean Army who turned professional at the age of 33. His background is deeply marked by the trauma of the Korean War, which he experienced as a five-year-old child. During the war, while trying to find food, he killed a wounded soldier, only to later discover that the soldier was his own father. The soldiers who found him took pity on the child and allowed him to join the army, an event that fundamentally shaped his psyche. This incident caused him to lose the instinct to eat, and he never again eats until he is full, maintaining a strict and extremely limited diet for over twenty years.

Personality-wise, Kim Yongbi is defined by a cold, prudent, and calculating demeanor that stands in stark contrast to the fiery and reckless nature of Joe Yabuki. He is an emotionally detached individual, a survival mechanism born from the horrors of his past. He is nicknamed The Human Computer because he carefully analyzes his opponents in the ring, selecting his punches with precision and fighting with stone-cold confidence rather than aggression. A significant manifestation of his trauma is his reaction to the sight of blood, which triggers his past memories. Consequently, after every boxing match, he washes his hands for over an hour, trying to cleanse himself of blood that only he can see on his hands.

Kim Yongbis primary motivation is not a personal rivalry but a professional ambition to challenge for the world championship. Before his fight with Joe Yabuki, he and his manager were planning to challenge the world champion, Jose Mendoza, and had even announced this intention to the media. He views his title defense against Joe simply as a stepping stone toward that ultimate goal. His role in the story is to serve as a major obstacle for Joe, representing the pinnacle of the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation and a mature, disciplined champion whose skills are honed for a world title shot.

His key relationship is with his manager and trainer, Colonel Jodal Hyun, who adopted him during the Korean War and guided him into boxing during high school. This relationship is paternal and foundational, as Hyun is the one who gave him a path forward after the trauma of his childhood. His relationship with Joe Yabuki is purely professional and adversarial, defined by mutual respect as two elite fighters. While Danpei, Joes coach, initially claims Kim is afraid of Joe, the reality is that Kim is eager to face him, and it is Danpei who wishes to avoid the match.

Over the course of his brief appearance, Kim Yongbi does not undergo a significant personal transformation, as his character is defined by the immutable trauma of his past. Rather, his development is shown through his professional journey. He retires at the age of 36 with a record of 13 wins, all by knockout, and only one loss in his final match against Joe Yabuki, to whom he also loses the OPBF title. He retires directly as a result of the injuries sustained in that final, brutal match, cementing his status as a formidable champion whose career was ended by the series protagonist.

As a boxer, Kim Yongbi possesses several notable abilities. His style is conservative and patient, preferring to let opponents exhaust themselves by missing punches before he methodically secures a knockout in the later rounds. This calculated approach is a direct expression of his personality, avoiding unnecessary risks and aggression. He is also known for his punching power, given that all of his professional wins were by knockout, and it is said that two of his opponents died in the ring during his first twelve bouts. He maintains a disciplined physical regimen, having fought his entire professional career with a severely restricted diet due to the childhood starvation that shrank his stomach to the size of a childs.
