Description
The character known as Kagero is also referred to as Kagehoshi or Kage Hoshi, which is the alias she uses upon her first appearance in the story. She is the biological mother of the protagonist, Recca Hanabishi. Her background is rooted in the distant past, as she originally lived over four hundred years ago as a member of the Hokage, a ninja clan with special abilities.
Kagero was the wife of Oka, the 25th leader of the Hokage, and gave birth to Recca during a turbulent time for the clan. The family situation was complicated, as her husband also had another son, Kurei, with a woman named Reina. This makes Kurei Recca's older half-brother. A prophecy within the clan stated that only one person per generation could wield the true power of flame, and when both young Recca and Kurei displayed this ability, it created a violent conflict that led to tragedy. Soon after, the Hokage were attacked and annihilated by the army of the warlord Oda Nobunaga. In a desperate act to save her infant son, Kagero used a forbidden time-manipulation technique known as Jikuryuri to send Recca into the future. The spell was successful, but as a consequence of using this forbidden power, Kagero was cursed with absolute immortality, unable to age or die, and was left to wander the centuries alone in search of her son.
In terms of personality, Kagero initially presents herself under the false identity of Kagehoshi as a cold, mysterious, and cunning manipulator. She is the first antagonist the heroes encounter, using her powers to control others for her own ends. However, this cold demeanor is a mask created by centuries of suffering and loneliness. When her true identity as Recca's mother is finally revealed, her personality shifts to reveal a deeply caring and maternal nature. She becomes a wise and supportive mentor to Recca and his friends, using her vast knowledge of Madogu, or magical tools, to advise them in their battles. Even after dropping her villainous facade, she retains a crafty and pragmatic edge, willing to use deception and manipulation when the situation calls for it to protect those she cares about.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is reuniting with her son Recca, whom she has not seen for four centuries. Having sacrificed her own mortal life to save him, her actions are all ultimately directed toward finding him, protecting him, and helping him understand his heritage. Her role in the plot is significant. She begins as a mysterious antagonist who tests Recca's strength, but later transforms into a crucial ally and the strategic core of Team Hokage. Her hideout serves as a base of operations, and her ability to scry on enemies provides invaluable intelligence.
Key relationships define her character arc. Her most important relationship is with her son, Recca. The revelation that she is his mother, not the villain he thought she was, is a major turning point in the series. She also shares a complex bond with Kurei, who was accidentally sent to the future along with Recca. As his stepmother, she feels a sense of responsibility for his fate, even as he becomes a primary antagonist. Her development is closely tied to this reveal, as she transitions from a shadowy figure shrouded in mystery to a compassionate and guiding parental figure.
Kagero possesses a number of notable abilities, the most prominent being her immortality, which makes her immune to aging, disease, and death. As a former kunoichi, or female ninja, she is also highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and possesses enhanced physical attributes, including sharp senses and lightning-fast reflexes that allow her to easily defeat multiple armed opponents. She is highly intelligent and an expert on Madogu, often formulating the team's battle strategies.
She wields several powerful Madogu. Her primary tool is the Eikai Gyoku, or Shadow Ball, which allows her to teleport through shadows, observe distant events through scrying, and even project the past. She also uses the Shikigami, an orb that can harden strands of her hair into sharp, needle-like weapons. In combat, she has been shown wielding the Kaigetsu, a crescent-shaped boomerang sword. Later in the series, she also acquires the Hokishin, a powerful cannon-like weapon that attaches to the user's arm and can fire various projectiles.
