Description
Kagerou, also known by her alias Kage Houshi, is a central figure in the narrative as the mother of the protagonist, Recca Hanabishi. Her existence is defined by a tragic past and an immortal curse. Originally a member of the Hokage ninja clan four hundred years ago, she was the wife of Ouka, the twenty-fifth leader of the clan, and gave birth to her son Recca. When the warlord Oda Nobunaga attacked and decimated their village, Kagerou was forced to use a forbidden time-manipulation technique called Jikuuryuuri. She used this power to send the infant Recca into the future to save his life, an act that came at an immense price. The forbidden spell rendered her completely immortal, unable to die, age, fall ill, or suffer permanent injury, binding her to an endless existence as she wandered through the centuries in search of her son.

Kagerou is a woman of striking appearance, said to look physically around twenty years old despite being over four centuries of age. She has long black hair, typically worn past her shoulders, and fair skin with two small moles beneath her lower lip. Her eyes are a distinctive medium blue or light purple, and she wears the symbol of the Hokage clan tattooed on the back of her right hand. In the present day, she is often seen in a long black cloak with a white turtleneck and a golden neckpiece, though she adopts more casual modern clothing when living at the Hanabishi residence.

In terms of personality, Kagerou is a complex figure who adapts her demeanor to her needs. Initially introduced under the pseudonym Kage Houshi, she presents herself as a cold, cunning, and manipulative individual, even serving as an early antagonist to test Recca and his friends. However, this harsh exterior is a mask for a profoundly lonely woman who has endured centuries of isolation. Once her true identity as Recca's mother is revealed, she becomes a caring, wise, and supportive mentor to the team. Despite her compassion, she retains a cunning edge and a talent for manipulation, often using trickery to achieve her goals, such as when she deceived her allies with a fake data disc to ensure a plan's success. Her centuries of grief and solitude have not made her bitter but rather strengthened her resolve to protect her son and guide him towards his destiny.

Her role in the story is multi-faceted. She functions initially as a mysterious antagonist who pushes Recca to unlock his hidden flame powers. After the revelation of her past, she transitions into the primary advisor and strategist for Team Hokage. Her extensive knowledge of the magical weapons known as Madogu, which she witnessed being created and scattered throughout history, proves invaluable during the Ura Buto Satsujin tournament. She serves as the team's resource, easily identifying the powers and weaknesses of the opponents' weapons. Together with Yanagi Sakoshita, she is considered to represent the element of Spirit or Soul in the series.

Her key relationships are defined by her past and her present mission. Her most significant relationship is with her son, Recca Hanabishi. Their bond is the driving force of her actions, as she spent four hundred years searching for him and orchestrated events to ensure his growth. She cannot physically touch Recca due to a secondary curse of the Jikuuryuuri technique, which forbids physical contact between the caster and the sent individual, forcing them to maintain their connection from a distance. Kagerou also has a fraught history with Kurei, her husband's son by another woman, Reina. As half-brothers, Kurei and Recca were both found to possess the power of flame, leading to a prophecy that one bore a cursed flame. Kagerou pleaded with the clan elders to spare Kurei's life, an act of mercy that had complex and long-lasting consequences. She is also the widow of Ouka, whose spirit later becomes the eighth flame dragon, Resshin. Throughout the series, she acts as a mentor and guardian figure to Recca's friends, including Domon, Fuuko, and Tokiya, offering them guidance and support.

Throughout the story, Kagerou undergoes a subtle but poignant development. She moves from a position of hidden, desperate longing to one of open, maternal care. The stoic and secretive facade of Kage Houshi falls away to reveal a woman finally able to express her love and pride for her son. Her personal journey is not just about finding Recca but also about coming to terms with her own immortality and the destruction of her clan. She finds a new purpose and a new family in Recca and his friends, easing the loneliness of her eternal life. Her curse of immortality is not permanent and is eventually lifted after a specific, climactic battle.

Kagerou possesses several notable abilities derived from her Hokage heritage and her cursed immortality. Her primary tool is a powerful Madogu called the Eikai Kyoku, or the Shadow Ball. This weapon allows her to teleport through shadows, project visions of the past to others, and perform acts of scrying. She is also a skilled user of Shikigami, using her own hair as a weapon. Her immortality grants her superhuman physical capabilities, including accelerated regeneration from any wound, enhanced strength, agility, and senses, as well as an immunity to disease, aging, and most forms of harm. This eternal existence has also given her a vast intellect, with a perfect memory that allows her to recall details and events from her four-hundred-year life with perfect clarity.
