Description
Kagerou, also known early in the story as Kagehoushi, is the mother of the protagonist Recca Hanabishi. Her true identity is hidden for a significant portion of the narrative, during which she presents herself under the alias Kage Houshi. She hails from the Hokage village in 16th-century Japan, where she was the wife of Ouka, the 25th leader of the Hokage clan. During a brutal attack on their village by the warlord Oda Nobunaga, Kagerou was forced to use a forbidden time-manipulation technique called Jikuuryuuri to send her infant son Recca four hundred years into the future to save his life. As a direct consequence of using this forbidden spell, Kagerou was cursed with absolute immortality. She spent the next four centuries wandering and searching for her son before finally locating him in the present day.

In terms of personality, Kagerou is portrayed as a multifaceted individual. At the beginning of the series, while using the pseudonym Kage Houshi, she adopts the demeanor of a cold, cunning, and manipulative antagonist who tests Recca and his friends. However, once her true intentions are revealed, it becomes clear that this harsh exterior is a facade born from centuries of loneliness and suffering. Beneath it, she is a deeply caring and maternal figure whose primary driving force is her love for her son. As a mentor to Recca and his team, she is wise, knowledgeable, and offers guidance, though she retains a manipulative streak when the situation calls for it, proving she is willing to deceive even her allies to achieve a successful outcome. She is the most mature member of the group, often acting as a mother-hen who offers advice and support. Her primary motivation throughout the story is to ensure Recca's safety and happiness, a goal she has sacrificed her own mortality to achieve.

Kagerou plays a crucial role as the team's advisor and the expert on Madougu, the psychic devices that many characters wield. Her key relationships are central to the plot. Her bond with her son, Recca, is the emotional core of her character arc, though a tragic side effect of the time-travel spell prevents them from physically touching. She also has a significant relationship with Kurei, Recca's older half-brother. Despite Kurei’s hostility and tragic fate, Kagerou pleaded with the Hokage elders to spare his life when he was a child, demonstrating her compassion. Her husband, Ouka, was the leader of the Hokage and the father of both Recca and Kurei. Throughout the story, Kagerou develops from a mysterious and seemingly villainous stalker into a trusted and beloved maternal figure for the entire Hokage team.

Kagerou possesses several notable abilities stemming from her ninja training and her immortal curse. Her primary Madougu is the Eikai Gyoku, also known as the Shadow Ball, which grants her a variety of powers including teleportation through shadows, showing people visions of the past, and scrying over long distances. Her immortality makes her unable to die or age, and allows her to recover almost instantly from any injury. She is also incredibly knowledgeable, having amassed centuries of experience and information regarding various psychic devices. While not primarily a front-line fighter, her skills and wisdom prove invaluable to the team.
