Description
Charlotte E. Yeager, who prefers to be called Shirley by her friends, is a witch from Liberion and a member of the renowned 501st Joint Fighter Wing. She hails from the rural town of Myra in West Virginia, where she was raised as the eldest of five siblings on a farm. Before her military service, she was already a famous daredevil, having shattered land speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flates as a motorcycle racer, riding a magically enhanced Indian Scout. This early success earned her the press moniker Glamorous Shirley, a nickname she also gave to her personal aircraft.
With the rank of Flight Lieutenant, Shirley is a young woman of sixteen or seventeen years, notable for her tall stature and buxom figure. Her personality is as large as her reputation; she is magnanimous, confident, and highly sociable, possessing a natural good nature that makes her a popular favorite among her peers. She is a quintessential thrill-seeker, driven by a lifelong ambition to break the sound barrier, a fascination with speed that defines her both on and off the battlefield. Despite her reckless and freedom-loving nature, she possesses a broad, objective view of situations and reliably plays her part when the situation becomes truly serious.
Shirley has several notable quirks that set her apart. She is exceedingly concerned with cleanliness, going so far as to have her personal bath transported with her to the 501st’s base in Britannia. She spends much of her free time in the machine shop, tinkering with and making unauthorized modifications to her Striker Unit, a hyper-modified P-51D Mustang, which often leads to reprimands from her superiors. While not skilled at fine cooking, she is an excellent barbecue chef. Her driving style is as wild as her flying, known for drifting on mountain roads and leaping across chasms in a supply truck.
Within the 501st, her most significant relationship is with Francesca Lucchini, a younger witch who she treats as a beloved younger sister. They share a sisterly bond filled with playful mischief and aerial daring, with Lucchini often seen affectionately cuddling up to her. Conversely, she maintains a spirited rivalry with Gertrud Barkhorn of Karlsland. The two frequently clash over tactics and discipline, with Barkhorn’s serious, rule-abiding nature contrasting sharply with Shirley’s casual individualism, though this friction is underlain by a mutual respect for each other’s combat abilities. She acts as an older sister figure to newer members like Yoshika Miyafuji and Lynne Bishop, and holds her commander, Mio Sakamoto, in high regard for giving her the freedom to excel.
Shirley experiences notable development through the series, much of it tied to her quest for speed. Her signature magical ability, Speed Boost, channels kinetic force to exponentially increase her velocity, eventually allowing her to become the first witch to break the sound barrier. This feat is first achieved during a surprise Neuroi attack and later repeated during a test flight, where she used her power to rescue Barkhorn from a malfunctioning jet. After the 501st disbands, she and Lucchini roam the North African and Mediterranean theaters with the 31st Joint Fighter Squadron, scavenging for parts to keep her Striker airborne. During this period, supply shortages forced her to adopt a distinctive red Britannian flight suit, replacing her original Liberion uniform. Her familiar is a rabbit, which manifests as leporine ears and a tail when her magical abilities are active, further connecting her to her identity as a creature of incredible speed and reflexes. In combat, she forgoes blades in favor of firearms, typically wielding a M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle or a Thompson submachine gun, as well as a customized Colt M1911 pistol given to her as a gift.
