Description
Maria Oosawa is one of the central characters in the anime CANAAN. She is a young woman with long blond hair and golden-brown eyes who works as a photographer. Her background includes a traumatic experience prior to the main story: she was abducted by terrorists during an incident in Shibuya and infected with the Ua virus, but she survived after receiving an experimental vaccine developed by her scientist father. This near-death experience shapes her outlook but does not dim her optimism. Maria first met the titular character Canaan while traveling in the Middle East, where Canaan saved her from hoodlums. From that moment, the two formed a deep bond. Maria greatly admires Canaan and wishes to shine as brilliantly as her friend does, an aspiration that partly motivates her pursuit of photography.

Her personality is warm and cheerful, often seen smiling. She is determined and resilient, maintaining a positive demeanor even when confronted with danger. She is aware of the violent and hazardous world that Canaan inhabits as a mercenary, but she actively chooses to stay close to her friend rather than retreat to safety. This reflect her loyalty and courage. Her dream of becoming a photographer drives her to work alongside the journalist Minoru Minorikawa as his partner, and she accompanies him on assignment in Shanghai. In the story, Maria serves as a grounding presence for Canaan, representing a normal life and human connection that pulls Canaan away from the darkness of her profession. Her role in the plot is significant as a catalyst for many of Canaan’s protective actions and as a perspective through which the audience views the conflict. Her life is repeatedly endangered by the terrorist organization Snake, which targets her to manipulate Canaan, placing her at the center of the escalating struggle over a revived Ua virus threat.

Key relationships define Maria’s arc. Her friendship with Canaan is the emotional core of the series; Maria acts as Canaan’s moral compass and her only real contact with a peaceful existence. She constantly worries for Canaan’s safety and provides warmth and normalcy. Her relationship with Minoru Minorikawa is that of a junior partner who assists with her photography skills and observational eye; the two work together as reporters. She also has a complicated connection to the events of the Shibuya incident, which ties into the larger conspiracy and the antagonist Alphard Al Sheya. Through the course of the story, Maria shows growth by confronting the dangers around her with increasing resolve. She does not develop combat skills, and her notable ability lies in her photography, which she uses to document the truth and to capture the light and beauty she sees in the world. After the climax of the series, she safely returns to Japan and opens a photo gallery, reflecting on her experiences and the deep bond she shared with Canaan, whose intense lifestyle ultimately forces a separation to protect Maria from further harm.
