TV-Series
Description
Isla is a sixteen-year-old girl who makes her living as a craftsman, creating and selling handmade silver jewelry and trinkets to sailors passing through the town of Yabitsu. Her circumstances are notably challenging, as she is also a single mother who became pregnant at a young age, and she is caring for her newborn son throughout the events of the story.

Despite the hardships she faces, Isla possesses a strong and lively personality. She does not allow her difficult situation to overwhelm her and consistently demonstrates resilience and a practical, helpful nature. This attitude makes her a well-liked presence, and she becomes popular among the crew of the submarine Ulysses, largely due to her willingness to assist with any necessary chores without complaint.

Her role in the narrative is closely tied to the protagonist, a fourteen-year-old boy named Keel, who has romantic feelings for her. Isla's situation becomes a primary driver for Keel's actions early in the series. During a devastating attack on Yabitsu, she goes into premature labor, and Keel, with the unexpected help of his long-lost twin brother Tean, assists in the delivery of her baby. Following the birth, the need to ensure Isla and her child receive proper care and safety is what compels Keel to board the submarine Ulysses, a decision that launches him into the center of the series' central conflict. Her baby is named after Keel in recognition of his efforts during the birth.

Isla's primary relationship is with Keel, who is dedicated to protecting her. She also forms a bond with the people on the Ulysses, who accept her and her child. Her development is less about a dramatic personal transformation and more about demonstrating quiet strength and adaptability in a world that has been largely destroyed. She consistently provides a sense of normalcy and humanity amidst the military and political turmoil, acting as a stabilizing force for those around her. Her notable abilities are not combat-oriented but are grounded in her craftsmanship and her resourceful, caring nature. This is further emphasized by the series' depiction of her as a symbolic figure of peace.
