OVA
Description
Fujioka is a male middle school student and a classmate of Kana Minami, one of the three Minami sisters. He is approximately thirteen to fourteen years old. A forward on the school soccer team, Fujioka is popular with many girls at school, but his affections are entirely focused on Kana, for whom he has a long-standing and deep crush.
Fujioka is generally affable, friendly, and somewhat naive, particularly in matters concerning girls and romance. He is known for being easily flustered and prone to jealousy, especially when other boys, such as his mistaken rival Akira, interact with Kana. His earnest and sometimes desperate attempts to win Kana's affection often lead him to act in questionable or comical ways. Despite his innocent demeanor, he has also been mistaken for a school banchou, or gang leader, due to a misunderstanding of his determined actions toward Kana, a title he eventually inherits as the fourth banchou.
His primary motivation is to have his romantic feelings recognized and reciprocated by Kana. To this end, he repeatedly attempts to confess to her, though his efforts are consistently unsuccessful. His confessions fail to register with Kana, who either remains completely oblivious to his intentions or misinterprets his actions entirely. This lack of progress becomes a defining pattern of his role in the story.
Within the overall narrative, Fujioka serves as a regular member of the supporting cast and a recurring visitor to the Minami household. His role in the OVA Minami-ke Betsubara is specifically tied to the Valentine's Day segment. In this episode, his main drive is the desperate hope of receiving chocolate from Kana on Valentine's Day. His persistence is rewarded in a scene where Kana gives him chocolate, an act she later claims to others was an accident. For Fujioka, this moment is one of great personal happiness, even though it is later revealed that Kana had simply forgotten the significance of the day and intended the chocolate as a general snack.
Fujioka has several key relationships that define his interactions. His relationship with Kana Minami is the most significant. While he is deeply in love with her, their dynamic is largely one-sided, with him endlessly plotting new ways to get her attention and her remaining cheerfully unaware of his true feelings. He is regularly invited to the Minami home, earning a pseudo-honorary place in the family. With Haruka, the eldest Minami sister, Fujioka is treated with consistent kindness. She seems amenable to the idea of a relationship between him and Kana but chooses not to interfere. Chiaki, the youngest Minami sister, initially views him with hostility due to Kana's false claim that he is a banchou. However, after realizing he is harmless, and noticing a resemblance to her father, she begins to treat him warmly, often sitting in his lap and viewing him as a father figure.
A unique and ongoing relationship for Fujioka is with Touma, the younger sister of his supposed rival Akira. Fujioka is the only character in the main cast who incorrectly believes Touma is a boy. He never discovers this truth, leading him to view Touma as a fellow male friend and the only other boy who regularly visits the Minami sisters. This misconception leads him to feel a special bond with Touma, as he tries to instruct her on how to act in a chivalrous or masculine manner. Furthermore, observing what he believes to be a very close friendship between a boy (Touma) and a girl (Chiaki), Fujioka concludes that they are destined to have a romantic relationship, a conclusion that is almost certainly incorrect.
Fujioka shows a degree of development in his persistence and tenacity. After his early, direct confessions fail, he adapts his strategy. He stops making outright declarations of love and instead tries to create situations that might lead to a date or a deeper connection. He remains utterly devoted to Kana, never wavering in his affection or considering any other potential romantic interests, such as Kana's friend Riko who has a crush on him. While he struggles academically at first, he eventually and mysteriously shows a staggering improvement in his grades. His most notable moment of development within the Betsubara OVA is the culmination of his efforts, as he successfully receives chocolate from Kana, a small but significant victory in his long campaign for her heart. His only notable abilities, beyond his general affability, are his skills as a forward on the school soccer team.
