Description
General Bat is a high-ranking commander of the Dinosaur Empire, a civilization of reptile-like beings who have lived underground for millennia and seek to reclaim the surface world. Serving as the second-in-command to Emperor Gore, he is one of the primary antagonists in the original Getter Robo story. His appearance is distinct, with a head that resembles a pterosaur or a bat, a feature that inspired his name and gives him a silhouette that has been compared to the character Devilman.

The personality and competence of General Bat vary significantly depending on which version of the story is being examined. In the original manga and the related OVA Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo, Bat is portrayed as a loyal, intelligent, and cool-headed commander. He is devoted to the Dinosaur Empire and his master, Emperor Gore, but remains pragmatic and knows when a battle is lost. For instance, he opposed the Emperor’s order for a general mobilization of incomplete Mechasaurs, correctly foreseeing disaster. In sharp contrast, the 1974 television anime adaptation depicts him as a radical, pathetic, and incompetent leader. This version of Bat is reckless with the lives of his subordinates, prioritizes his own safety, and unilaterally pushes suicidal tactics.

In his later appearance in the sequel series Getter Robo Arc, an aged General Bat is seemingly senile, confined to a wheelchair, and obsessed with telling stories about his past battles with the Getter pilot Ryoma Nagare. However, this senility is revealed to be a facade; beneath the frail exterior, he remains perfectly sane and physically capable, effortlessly overpowering a much larger rival to protect Emperor Gore III.

General Bat's role in the story is to lead the Dinosaur Empire's military forces. He personally mobilizes the giant monsters known as Mechasaurs and participates in key assaults on the Saotome Institute, the laboratory that created Getter Robo. His motivations are rooted in his duty to his empire. While he is personally loyal to Emperor Gore, his ultimate allegiance is to the survival and glory of the Dinosaur Empire itself, and he is willing to support a new leader if he deems the current ruler unfit. He holds a deep, obsessive respect for his human enemy, Ryoma Nagare, whom he often recalls with admiration.

Throughout his various incarnations, General Bat's development is notable. In the manga, he survives the empire's initial defeat, retreating to the underground magma layer when the surface battle is lost, even if it means abandoning his Emperor. He adapts and continues to serve a new generation of his kind under Emperor Gore III, eventually forming an alliance with the Saotome Institute against an even greater extraterrestrial threat. In the anime, his story often ends in defeat; for example, he famously drowns in the deep sea while piloting the octopus-type Mechasaur, Goda, and is later implied to be killed in a self-destruct attack.

General Bat possesses several notable abilities. He is a capable pilot of various Mechasaurs. He has demonstrated surprising physical strength, even in his old age. A unique trait in the original TV anime is that he has a weak heart, for which he installed an artificial one, allowing him to survive being stabbed through the chest.
