TV-Series
Description
Emperor Yura, also known as Yura the Great, is a fictional character from the original Getter Robo anime television series. He is depicted as the enigmatic and true ruler of the Dinosaur Empire, a shadowy figure who holds a position of authority even greater than that of the more visibly active Emperor Gore. Yura is an anime-exclusive character and does not have a counterpart in the original manga version of Getter Robo.
In terms of background, very little is definitively established about Yura's origins. Unlike the reptilian members of the Dinosaur Empire, his exact race is ambiguous. He is often referred to as a great demon, and his design sets him apart from his subordinates, suggesting a being of a different, possibly more ancient or mystical, nature. His physical appearance is imposing and distinctly non-human. He stands at a towering height, with dark orange skin and yellow sclera. He wears a long cloak over dark armor and a distinctive, tall headdress adorned with two large horns, and his eyes are typically covered by red lens-like devices.
Yura’s personality is defined by impatience and intimidation. He rules the Dinosaur Empire from the shadows through fear, communicating secretly with Emperor Gore and pressuring him to conquer the surface world. He has little tolerance for the repeated failures of his forces and displays a cold, demanding demeanor towards Gore, who lives in terror of him to the point of having nightmares about his appearance. Despite his fearsome reputation, Yura is largely a static and background figure for most of the series, preferring to remain behind his throne and only intervening directly when the situation becomes dire. His primary motivation is the successful conquest of the surface, which he seeks to achieve by driving Gore and the Dinosaur Empire forward.
Roles and relationships are central to understanding Yura's place in the story. His most significant relationship is with Emperor Gore, who serves as the public face and field commander of the Dinosaur Empire while Yura acts as the power behind the throne. Yura maintains his rule through a mixture of veiled threats and the promise of power, giving Gore a final chance to succeed after numerous defeats. He is a mysterious and distant figure even to other high-ranking members of the empire, like General Bat, who seem unaware of his existence or exact nature. Yura's role in the plot is to serve as the ultimate antagonist, the final commander who unleashes the empire's most devastating weapon. His personal involvement in the climax signals the final, desperate phase of the war.
Over the course of the narrative, Yura undergoes very little personal development, remaining an enigmatic force until the end. His major action is to personally grant Emperor Gore the use of his ultimate super-weapon, the Invincible Battleship Dai, to crush the Getter Robo team. With this weapon, the Dinosaur Empire succeeds in defeating Getter Robo and apparently conquering the surface world. Yura descends to the surface to personally celebrate this triumph, but his victory is short-lived. During the celebration, a final desperate attack by the pilot Musashi Tomoe causes the Invincible Battleship Dai to go berserk, leading to Yura being crushed to death by the out-of-control vessel, bringing an end to his rule.
Regarding notable abilities, Yura is not primarily a front-line combatant. His greatest power lies in his authority and control over the Dinosaur Empire's resources, including its armies and technology. He has indirect access to all personnel and is the commander of the Invincible Battleship Dai, a nearly unstoppable fortress. He is also suggested to have other, more mysterious powers. He seems to possess the ability to control volcanic forces and has a degree of foresight, appearing in Gore's dreams to threaten and manipulate him. He also commands his own personal army and weapons that are separate from the Dinosaur Empire's regular forces, further underscoring his unique and powerful status.
