Description
Arima Emerson is a secondary character in Suzuka, serving as the primary track and field rival to the protagonist, Yamato Akitsuki. He is a male teenager with blonde hair cut to neck length and gray eyes, standing at 180 centimeters tall and weighing 72 kilograms. His birthday is July 7.

Arima is introduced as the nationally ranked number one sprinter in the 100-meter dash for high school students. He initially attends Touto University High School. A significant part of his background involves his junior high school years, where he was consistently defeated by Kazuki Tsuda, a former star runner and the object of Suzuka Asahina's affection. This history remains a touchy subject for him, and he is sensitive about comparisons to Kazuki.

Like Suzuka, Arima accepts an offer to study abroad in the United States for a period. While overseas, he keeps himself informed about Yamato's running times back in Japan. After his return, he decides to attend Touto University and run for its track team.

In terms of personality, Arima is most often depicted as arrogant and exceptionally confident in his own sprinting abilities. He has a following of fans who attend tournaments to support him. While his demeanor can be abrasive, he is not without complexity. He demonstrates a capacity to be helpful, though his arrogance sometimes holds him back from showing it more directly.

Arima plays a crucial role in the story as a rival who pushes Yamato to confront his own limits and priorities. He is first introduced at a track meet, where he confronts Suzuka after she loudly claims he is not as good as Kazuki. Yamato steps in to defend her, leading to a race between the two. Although Yamato nearly catches up, he ultimately falls short, and Arima wins. Despite this, Arima is visibly disturbed that Yamato pushed him so hard.

Later, his role becomes more significant in shaping Yamato's life decisions. Tetsuhiko and Souichi use Arima in an attempt to reignite Yamato's competitive fire. When this strategy fails to get a reaction, Arima directly asks Yamato what is troubling him. After Yamato explains his situation involving Suzuka and her pregnancy, Arima offers blunt, utilitarian advice, stating that if he were in Yamato's place, he would prioritize his track career and have the girl get an abortion. This statement provokes a fight, as it clarifies for Yamato that Suzuka and their unborn child are more important to him than running. In this way, Arima indirectly helps Yamato realize his true priorities, leading to Yamato's decision to forgo university and seek employment to support his family.

Despite their rivalry and differing values, Arima develops a measure of respect for Yamato. Near the end of the series, he expresses hope that he will have a chance to compete against Yamato on a larger stage, specifically at the Olympics. He later goes on to represent Japan in the 100-meter sprint. His key relationships are primarily defined by his rivalry with Yamato and his past as a perpetual runner-up to Kazuki Tsuda, whose legacy continues to hang over the track world within the story.

Arima's notable ability is his speed; he is the top-ranked high school sprinter in the nation in the 100-meter event. This ability is his defining characteristic and the source of his confidence and social standing among his peers.
