Description
Mariya Shidou is a central figure in the story, a sixteen-year-old male student who cross-dresses as a girl to attend the prestigious Ame no Kisaki Catholic girls’ school. He is the older twin brother of Shizu Shidou and acts in her place, using her name as part of a bet devised by his late grandmother, the former chairwoman of both the all-male and all-female schools. The bet requires Mariya and his twin to each attend a school for the opposite gender for three years without anyone discovering their true sex; the winner becomes head of both schools. Mariya deeply respects and cares for his grandmother, keeping a rosary she once owned as a memento.
On the surface, Mariya presents himself as a kind, selfless, and impeccably beautiful girl, with a calm and composed demeanor that convinces the entire school and faculty of his assumed gender. His true personality, however, is starkly different—cunning, manipulative, and profoundly sadistic. He derives genuine pleasure from tormenting others, especially the protagonist Kanako Miyamae and his twin sister Shizu, though he claims that his harsh treatment of Shizu is a twisted expression of love. He is highly adaptable, adjusting his persona to suit any situation, and uses his striking looks and feminine grace to maintain his disguise while orchestrating elaborate schemes to outmaneuver those who threaten his secret.
Mariya’s motivations are driven primarily by the bet and his desire to win the chairmanship, as well as a deep-seated connection to his grandmother. He is incredibly astute and possesses a strategic mind, allowing him to navigate the complexities of the girls’ school and manipulate people emotionally to maintain control. He does not rely on physical combat; instead, his primary abilities are psychological tactics, deception, and emotional manipulation. He is always accompanied by his blunt, passive maid Matsurika, who helps him with his corset and other aspects of his disguise, often serving as a grounding presence during his chaotic antics.
His role in the story is both protagonist and antagonist, driving much of the comedy and drama through his interactions with Kanako. Their relationship oscillates between torment and a growing, uneasy understanding, as Kanako’s discovery of his true nature forces Mariya to occasionally confront his own feelings. His relationship with Shizu is similarly complex—she is both his closest ally and a frequent target of his sadism. Over the course of the series, Mariya experiences moments of introspection, particularly through his interactions with Kanako, which hint at a battle between his genuine emotions and his sadistic persona. While his cunning and manipulative tendencies remain central, the necessity of maintaining his disguise and the consequences of his actions impose limits on his behavior, contributing to his development as a multifaceted character.
