TV-Series
Description
Matsurika Shinouji is the personal maid of Mariya Shidou in Maria Holic. She is the older twin sister of Rindou Shinouji, who also serves as a servant. Matsurika attends classes alongside Mariya at the all-girls Catholic school, remaining largely hidden from the other students and following Mariya’s orders without being noticed. She is sixteen years old, stands 162 centimeters tall, has long gray hair styled in pigtails, and yellow eyes. Her birthday is September 16.
Her personality is defined by a near-constant silent and deadpan demeanor. When she does speak, she is almost always rude, delivering her lines with no change in facial expression. The majority of her insults are directed at Kanako Miyamae and Mariya herself. She refers to Kanako by nicknames such as Ms. Pig, Eiffel Tower, and Tokyo Tower because of Kanako’s tall stature. Toward Mariya, she makes sharp remarks about his cross-dressing habits and sexual perversions. Despite this abrasive behavior, Matsurika is fiercely loyal to Mariya and carries out her duties diligently. She is disciplined and capable of impeccable acting when needed, though she also possesses a sadistic streak and seems to take pleasure in watching others suffer for her own amusement. In her private thoughts, she is dissatisfied with her servitude and has been known to lament her position as a slave.
Matsurika’s primary role in the story is a supporting character who provides comic relief through her cutting sarcasm and emotionless delivery. She acts as a confidante and accomplice to Mariya, helping him maintain his disguise and execute his schemes. Her relationship with Mariya is marked by a blend of loyalty and open mockery; she is the only person who can insult him without facing repercussions, and both of them enjoy teasing Kanako. Her dynamic with Kanako is antagonistic, defined by rivalry and playful bullying. She also serves as a bridge between characters, observing and commenting on their interactions.
She does not undergo significant development over the course of the series, but her unwavering loyalty and sharp wit remain constants. Her notable abilities include a stealthy presence that allows her to go unnoticed, high intelligence, and cunning strategies that assist Mariya while remaining inconspicuous. She is also adept at delivering emotional jabs disguised as humor, which adds depth to the comedy. Her refusal to display overt emotion sometimes makes it difficult for others to understand her true feelings, contributing to her enigmatic nature.
