Description
Fujiwara no Akiko is a supporting character in the Heian period story who holds the status of a princess. She first encounters the main protagonist, Abe no Masahiro, within the Imperial Palace shortly after his coming-of-age ceremony. Their initial meeting occurs when Masahiro saves her from an attacking demon, an event that establishes a lasting connection between them, as Masahiro makes a promise to protect her from the forces that target her.

Akiko possesses a striking appearance, characterized by fair skin, long brown hair, and brown eyes. Her physical beauty is notable enough to be recognized even by a deity enshrined at Kifune Shrine. Despite her high social standing, her personality is defined by a strong will and a fierce sense of independence. She often becomes annoyed by the rigid customs and expectations imposed upon her due to her status as a princess. Preferring self-sufficiency, she enjoys performing ordinary tasks such as shopping and cooking by herself rather than delegating them to servants, a tendency that is encouraged and supported by Masahiros mother. Though known for her kind and gentle nature, which makes her popular among nearly everyone she meets, she also has a tendency to feel guilty about any trouble she might inadvertently cause others.

Her primary motivation is to help those she cares about, particularly Masahiro. Even though she is aware she is not physically strong, she does whatever she can to assist him, offering steadfast support in his duties as an onmyouji. Her role in the story is heavily defined by a unique and potent spiritual ability. Akiko is one of the few individuals of her time to possess the Kenki, or the power to see demons and spirits. In fact, her talent for seeing youkai surpasses even that of the legendary Abe no Seimei and his grandson Masahiro. She can also sense the precise location of the Twelve Shinsho, the powerful shikigami serving the Abe family, even when they are in a calm, inactive state.

However, this great spiritual power makes her a perpetual target for malevolent forces. Enemies often try to capture or harm her to use her abilities for their own purposes, such as performing dark rituals. On one notable occasion, she is kidnapped by demons who intend to use her blood to revive their master, prompting a desperate rescue attempt by Masahiro and his allies. Her role as a frequent target leads her to be characterized as a damsel in distress who often requires saving, but her courage and willingness to help despite the danger are also defining traits.

Her key relationship is with Abe no Masahiro. Despite their different social statuses, they become very good friends. Akiko deeply admires Masahiros strength of will, and as the story progresses, their bond deepens into a mutual romantic love. Her growing closeness to the Abe family is reflected in her domestic life, as she eventually comes to live at Masahiros home and learns to perform everyday chores. Later in the light novel series, Akiko demonstrates significant emotional development; she comes to a painful but mature acceptance that she may never be able to have a conventional future with Masahiro due to his dangerous destiny and a heavenly mandate that shortens his life, showing her capacity for deep sacrifice and resolve. Her abilities are greatly admired by the Twelve Shinsho, including Guren, Rikugo, and Genbu, who respect her incredible spiritual sight.
