Description
Aporia is a central antagonist from the later arcs of the anime, serving as the true, combined form of the three beings known as the Three Emperors of Yliaster: Primo, Lester, and Jakob. These three were not separate individuals but were artificial creations, androids designed by the scientist Z-one, who divided the memories and personality of a single human from a doomed future into three distinct vessels representing different stages of life. Aporia is the result of those three components merging back into one entity.

The original human who became Aporia lived in a future where humanity’s overreliance on Synchro Summoning caused the energy system known as Ener-D to go out of control, leading to a cataclysm. As a child, he witnessed his parents being killed by the machine-like beings called the Meklord Emperors, which emerged from the disaster. As a young man, he fell in love with a fellow resistance fighter, only to watch her be killed in battle as well. In his old age, he wandered a desolate, ruined world believing he was the last living human. He described these three tragedies as the three despairs that defined his heart: the despair of losing those who loved him, the despair of losing those he loved, and the despair of having no one left to love at all.

After meeting Z-one and the other last survivors, they formed the organization Yliaster to find a way to change history and prevent their future from ever happening. As his natural life ended, the original Aporia asked Z-one to use his three despairs as data to create the three android emperors, allowing him to continue serving their mission. In his combined android form, Aporia is physically imposing, with a large mechanical body that incorporates features from all three of his parts: the face and aggressive demeanor of Primo, the calculating mind of Jakob, and the back-mounted Duel Disk of Lester. A green orb sits on his forehead, and his chest resembles the design of his most powerful monsters.

Aporia's personality is a turbulent mix of the three facets that compose him, though he is most defined by the overwhelming despair born from his memories. He refers to himself as the embodiment of despair and initially believes that human emotions are a flaw that leads only to ruin. He argues that the human heart is a useless thing and that machines are superior because they are not subject to such painful contradictions. Despite this, Z-one notes that among all the survivors, Aporia was always the most human, a fact that Aporia himself tries to reject by seeking to become a pure, emotionless machine.

His primary motivation is the completion of the Grand Design, a plan to erase the city of New Domino from history to prevent the future destruction of the world. To this end, he and his three incarnations manipulate events from behind the scenes for years, ultimately aiming to create a special circuit during the World Racing Grand Prix tournament. When his three forms are defeated in the final race, they combine to form Aporia, who personally duels against the protagonist Yusei Fudo. In this duel, he demonstrates his power by summoning Meklord Astro Mekanikle, a massive machine that absorbs Synchro Monsters.

After being defeated, he is recovered and repaired by Z-one, but he blames his loss on the flickers of emotion still within him. He asks Z-one to remove his humanity entirely, declaring he will become a true machine. In this cold, logical state, he duels Jack Atlas, Luna, and Leo within the floating fortress known as the Ark Cradle. He uses a strategy that inflicts real physical damage, pushing his opponents to the brink. However, during this duel, the hope and determination shown by his opponents force him to confront his own feelings. He has a breakdown, swinging between cold calculation and outbursts of fear and despair, before ultimately realizing that the only reason he has been able to endure his suffering for so long is that he never truly lost hope. He admits that hope can be found in the depths of despair.

This realization marks his final development. He abandons his mission to destroy the present and instead challenges Z-one himself, hoping to show his creator that the future is not hopeless. Though he is ultimately defeated, he passes on his final strength to Yusei, using his own Duel Disk to grant Yusei's D-Wheel the power of flight so that Yusei can confront Z-one. Aporia's journey is a tragic arc from a being of pure despair to one who, in his final moments, chooses to put his faith in hope and in the next generation.

In terms of abilities, as an android, Aporia can physically fuse with his Duel Runner and even with his own Field Spell card, Fortissimo the Mobile Fortress. He can manifest the effects of his cards as real, physical phenomena, causing genuine destruction and injury. He is also telepathic, as shown when he communicates silently with Z-one. His dueling style revolves around the Meklord archetype, specifically monsters that can absorb an opponent's Synchro Monsters to grow more powerful, reflecting his nature as a being from a future where Synchro Summoning led to the apocalypse. His key monsters include the three Meklord Emperors Granel, Wisel, and Skiel, as well as their combined forms, Meklord Astro Mekanikle and Meklord Astro Dragon Asterisk.
