Description
Greiger, also known as Bommer in the original Japanese version, is a character from the animated series Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. He is introduced as a powerful and imposing duelist who participates in the Fortune Cup tournament. Of a stature that dwarfs most other characters, Greiger is an honorable combatant who carries himself with a sense of pride and stoicism. His motivations are deeply rooted in his origins; he comes from a poor, destitute village, and his primary reason for dueling is to earn money to send back and provide financial aid to his community. He shares a similar background with the character Crow Hogan, having grown up in poverty and learned to duel to survive.
Greiger's role in the story begins during the Fortune Cup, where he is secretly one of five duelists placed in the tournament by the antagonist Rex Goodwin. Goodwin has promised to provide reconstruction aid for Greiger's destroyed village in exchange for his cooperation in exposing the Signers. His first match is against Luna, though her brother Leo duels in her place disguised as her. Greiger wins this match easily, never feeling intimidated by his opponent. In the semifinals, he faces the protagonist, Yusei Fudo. During this intense duel, Greiger quickly summons his powerful trump card, Flying Fortress SKY FIRE, and brings Yusei down to only 300 Life Points. However, Yusei ultimately manages to defeat him.
Enraged by his loss, which he feels has cost him the ability to help his younger siblings, Annie and Max, Greiger publicly reveals the truth about Goodwin's manipulation and his village's destruction. He then attempts to kill Goodwin by ramming his Duel Runner into the control room, but he is stopped by Yusei and subsequently arrested.
Greiger's story takes a darker turn when he becomes a member of the Dark Signers, a group of duelists resurrected by the Earthbound Immortals to destroy the Signers. After being killed by Roman Goodwin, he is transformed into a Dark Signer and receives the Killer Whale dark mark, gaining the Earthbound Immortal Chacu Challhua. As a Dark Signer, he pursues Yusei but is intercepted by Crow Hogan, leading to a Shadow Turbo Duel. During this duel, a devastating truth is revealed: his village was not destroyed by an experiment of the organization Yliaster, but by the Earthbound Immortals themselves. The souls of his siblings and the other villagers had been trapped within his own Earthbound Immortal, Chacu Challhua. Upon this revelation, Greiger tries to stop the duel, but the Earthbound Immortal takes control of his body and forces him to continue fighting. Crow defeats him, and as the price for being a Dark Signer, Greiger crumbles to dust. He dies with peace, however, finally knowing the fate of his village and that their souls have been set free.
Greiger is later restored to life following the final defeat of the Dark Signers' king. In the subsequent World Racing Grand Prix arc, he returns home to his family and later travels to Nazca. He plays a key role in guiding Jack Atlas, sending a prophetic dream and a letter warning that Jack's own power would destroy him. Greiger then reveals the history of the Crimson Devil, an evil entity that even the Dark Signers could not control, and explains how a legendary Signer defeated it using a Burning Soul.
In terms of dueling abilities, Greiger is a formidable strategist. His primary deck is a Reactor deck, featuring monsters based on World War II-era aircraft. His strategy focuses on summoning Summon Reactor SK, Trap Reactor Y FI, and Spell Reactor RE to inflict damage whenever the opponent performs a specific action, ultimately allowing him to special summon his ace monster, Flying Fortress SKY FIRE. As a Dark Signer, he incorporates naval and undersea-themed monsters and his Earthbound Immortal, Chacu Challhua, a Killer Whale entity that can directly attack the opponent and prevent them from conducting their Battle Phase.
