Description
Gill Randsborg, known as Jill deLauncebeaux in the Japanese version, is a character who appears in the Fortune Cup arc of the anime. He is a large and fearsome man who presents himself as a knight, complete with a full suit of medieval-style golden armor. His Duel Disk is customized to resemble a shield, and he often carries a sword as part of his persona. In the original Japanese version, he claims to be a blood descendant of a family of medieval knights, while in the English adaptation, he is presented simply as a cosplay duelist. He speaks in an exaggerated, archaic form of English, using phrases like "I activate my monster's ability most special," which is made clear to be an act, a role he plays for the audience.

His personality is self-righteous, and he genuinely sees himself as a force for justice. He is recruited by Rex Goodwin to compete in the Fortune Cup as one of several Dueling Assassins. Goodwin's plan is for Randsborg to duel Akiza Izinski, known as the Black Rose Witch, in order to expose her true power as a Signer. While Randsborg agrees to this mission, his primary motivation is not simply to follow orders but to achieve victory in the tournament and defeat the person he considers an evil witch. He looks down on Akiza as a young girl and a wicked being, believing it is his knightly duty to hunt her.

In his only on-screen duel, Randsborg faces Akiza in the first round of the Fortune Cup. He uses a Masked Knight Deck, which focuses on LV monsters. These monsters have the ability to inflict effect damage, or burn damage, to the opponent by forgoing their own attack. The strategy culminates in Masked Knight LV7, which can both deal burn damage and attack in the same turn. Despite his preparations and confident declarations, Randsborg is completely overwhelmed by Akiza's psychic powers, which make the duel physically real. He quickly falls victim to her abilities, losing control of his monsters and his field as she summons her ace monster, Black Rose Dragon. He suffers a crushing defeat and collapses from the shock of the attack, his knightly persona shattered in the process.

His key relationship within the story is with his opponent, Akiza Izinski, whom he underestimates and fails to defeat. He also has a connection to Rex Goodwin, who orchestrates his participation in the tournament for a larger purpose. Randsborg serves a specific role in the narrative as an early obstacle for Akiza, designed to showcase her frightening power to both the audience and the other characters. He does not undergo significant development, remaining a static character whose defeat is used to advance the plot concerning the Signers. His notable abilities, aside from his distinctive deck strategy, are more performative than dueling-related, centered on maintaining his knight persona throughout the match until his loss forces him to break character.
